After GOP Attack, Reid Comes to White House Dinner With a Bitter Taste in His Mouth

By Charles Babington
Tuesday, February 8, 2005; Page A05

It's safe to assume that the mood at the White House dinner table last night was a bit more tense than usual. A few hours before dining with President Bush and a handful of others, Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) took the Senate floor to rebuke the president and his political party for a 13-page mass-mail attack on Reid, authored by the Republican National Committee.

"Is this how he wants to be a uniter?" Reid asked in his speech. The RNC, he said, "is his committee," so how can Bush call for bipartisanship one minute and then "send out scurrilous letters saying that I'm a bad guy? In great detail. I mean, is President George Bush a man of his word? . . . Mr. President, I call upon you to repudiate this document, to tell the Republican National Committee, 'Don't mail it.' "

29. Hate Radio, Hate TV + RW mouthpieces will devour this list like pirahnas
13 pages of hate and lies is the transcript for bush minions, telling them exactly what to say and when to say it. They will repeat the hate relentlessly, like a noise machine with no 'off' button. Just watch the Sunday morning shows, which are populated with right wing bush shills and you'll be able to easily pick up on the talking points.

It's a new day in America, though. We (and Harry) are not gonna let them roll over us in the Senate. Harry 'Give 'em Hell' Reid is the real deal and has already come out punching back!

I hope he takes over soon. The good doctor isn't afraid of dishing it out and doesn't have to work within DC Congressional decency zones.

Dean will throw it back at them. Reid needs some cover, and I think Dean can provide it. I hope so, anyway.

14. "A few hours before dining with President Bush and a handful of others"
I know I'm naive, but why is Reid cozying up to Bush at a private dinner? Harry can't have his cake and eat it too.

15. 2 Dem Senators, 2 Repub senators and their WIVES
were invited to small White House dinner as part of Bush's "reaching out" to Dems. (if you read the whole article, it's detailed there). Clearly Bush hadn't expected Roll Call to spill the beans about the RNC's planned mailing to ONE MILLION of this 13 page rant against Reid, prior to this dinner. So we're talking about an intimate dinner for 10 people, all around one cozy table - and with their WIVES. What I think is good is that Bush cannot now be heard to say, "Hey, I didn't know about this before the RNC did it. Good for Roll Call - wonder how long their independence will survive.

17. He's the Senate Minority Leader
He has contact with the WH just like every other leader before him. Usually though the WH isn't so blatant in their
we-couldn't-give-a-shit-what-the-other-party-thinks attitude and gestures. This one sets historical precedent for giving the middle finger to anyone of consequence and stature in the Democratic party.

Just think of that nasty crack at President Clinton the WH made after the Tsunami in answer to it's slow response to giving aid. It was something like, "We aren't going to just say 'We feel your pain and do nothing', actions speak louder than words." Of course later that week they had to ask the Big Dog to help with their efforts in assessing the catastrophe and diplomatic duties (having chapped off nearly all the world). The WH acted like Clinton was a welcome old friend - all kiss ass-y in the press conference, as though they hadn't spanked him earlier in the week to cover their own appalling lack of action.

Bush and his crew really have no manners, class or decorum. They don't even try to pretend to care what the other side thinks.

19. We ought to let Harry Reid know by phone & e mail that we
love his speaking out, that we support him and we're behind him telling it like it is 2000%

One flaw in him as a liberal dem though, he's anti abortion...doesn't sit well with us wimmins. Otherwise he's a firebrand.

during his tenure as Senate minority leader, I'm willing to overlook it for the time being.

21. Very well put and I agree with Pallas180 on #19.
I think this is one we should probably all make a phone call on. Call your own reps and then call Reid's office and say hey we support you.

Look into what the "regime" is trying to do in Nevada and then it all falls into place. It is too late tonight, I'm too tired, but it was in a thread I believe I even bookmarked, re: the budget cuts and what is in store for Nevada.

Night all.

26. The Freaktards were talking about this yesterday
Smug and "holier than thou" about how they were going to "Daschle" Harry Reid.

What doesn't make sense to me is why he even went to the dinner. I would have very publicly and loudly "declined" to eat a scrap or a crumb with the "boy king".

I mean, how does the conversation go at one of these things?

*: Yeah Harry, we sent out a million 13 page documents that accuse you of being a communist, terrorist sympathizing, "tax and spend", trial lawyer ambulance chasing moron, who probably cheated on your wife and kills little babies.....Would you please pass the gravy?"

Reid: "Well Mr pResident, I really don't like that talk...Please pass the mashed taters".

How long are the Democrats going to continue turning the other cheek, only to get it fractured?

At least the Senator in Godfather II was honest when he said; "I despise you and your whole fucking family".

I don't think the Dems understand that we want a FIGHTER!!!

28. I disagree ...
The brave and right thing to do was to go to the dinner, as the Senate minority Leader, and give Bush HELL about his two-faced bullshit. Call him on it to his stupid monkey face. Preferably in front of reporters.
