Court Upholds Army's "Stop-Loss" Policy

Little Rock, AR (AP) - A federal judge has tentatively upheld the Army's "stop-loss'' policy that allows extension of enlistment terms during the war in Iraq.

U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth of the District of Columbia had declined in December to issue a temporary order keeping a Morrilton man in this country while his court challenge to the Army's enlistment-extension policy was pending. On Monday, Lamberth rejected a request for an injunction that would have ordered the Army to release Specialist David Qualls of Morrilton and seven other soldiers who filed suit.

Since the suit was filed, Qualls has re-enlisted in the Army for six years, according to his lawyer.
