BBC: Danish centre-right win new term
Edited on Tue Feb-08-05 05:37 PM by KDLarsen
Denmark's centre-right coalition has won a second term in office with a comfortable majority, partial returns from the general election show.

Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen's bloc had 56% of the vote by the time the count had passed the halfway mark and the opposition admitted defeat.

Mogens Lykketoft, leader of the Social Democrats, congratulated his rival in a speech to supporters in Copenhagen.

The government is set to have nearly 100 seats in the 179-seat parliament.

Though it might interest DU'ers, since we're a part of the coalition (if that even exist anymore).

2. Very much..
.. which is also why I voted for the government party Venstre. The only thing I really disagreed with, was the decision to go to war with Iraq, but I couldn't let that one mistake sway me. After all, after personally paying 42% in taxes for a part time job (my dad once paid 63% for his full time job), I think it's time someone take a hard look at those taxes.

3. 42% to 63% tax rate!
That is criminal. How did they allow things to go that far?

5. Social programs - basically the US Democratic Party's wet dream
Free Education from Kindergarten to University
Free healthcare across Denmark & Europe (free home transport if your injury in another country requires surgery)
Free choice of hospital, doctor & dentist
A public transportation that kicks rear end (I live in southern part of Roskilde, a city of 50-60k residents, & get 2-3 busses to the city center every hour)
etc. etc. etc.

6. I spent three weeks in your country.
And I was extremely impressed.

Seemed to me that the Danes have created an amazing society with a great quality of life. (You forgot to mention the swimming pools and saunas like the ones I visited in or near Olby.)

Oh, yes. And everyone complains a lot about high taxes.

(Can't have everything  )

7. Yeah, public swimming pools
.. though I haven't used one for ages. I don't know why I took those for granted, but thinking about it, just about every more or less large city (ie. with 1000-5000+citizens) have their own swimming pool.
