Va. House OKs Gay Marriage Amendment Ban
Va. House OKs Gay Marriage Amendment Ban

Tuesday, February 8, 2005

(02-08) 13:46 PST Richmond, VA (AP) --

The Virginia House approved a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage Tuesday, despite a warning from the state's first openly gay legislator that the measure will one day prove as shameful as slavery and segregation.

The House voted 78-18 in favor of a resolution similar to one easily approved in the Senate on Monday.

If negotiators can reconcile the two versions this year, and the measure passes both chambers again next year, it will be put to the voters in November 2006.

"Today is one of those moments for which we shall one day be ashamed," said Democrat Adam P. Ebbin, who is gay.

1. Marv Albert
Ah, Virginia. The same state that prosecuted Marv Albert and his GIRLFRIEND under the sodomy laws? Nothing more needs to be said about Virginia.

2. I'm Glad the State Of Virginia Has Solved All Their Problems....
...and now has time to devote to time-wasters like this.

Just remember one thing: Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson both live in Virginia.

16. That's quite a burden for one state.
Falwell & Robertson.

5. From the headline I thought it was a ban on the amendment
Very poor copy writing.

I was thinking this was going to be a good thing. Wrong!

6. I agree. The word 'ban' is extraneous and confusing. (n/t)

17. Same lack of understanding here.
Couldn't tell from the headline if they were banning gay marriage or banning the amendment against gay marriage. Makes the headline rather worthless, unless you see it as something to encourage the readers to read the actual article.

7. You can't stop the Gay Rights movement.
The Civil Rights era proved that. It's like trying to put toothpaste back in the tube. Conservatives will continue to rant and rave, of course, but they're rapidly coming to a point where their far-right and loony arguments won't be convincing to most of the country. They ALWAYS go too far. (God bless 'em).

And that's all I have to say about that.

18. I wonder what would have been the harm in that.
Perhaps things would have worked out better.

10. I'm so proud of my "red" narrow-minded legislators and the
narrow-minded blue ones also. (sarcasm...please note) I'm sure Falwell and Robertson are giving thanks to their god who loves the "sinner", but not the "sin" as Falwell is so often shooting off his bigoted mouth about.

11. we're moving
From Massachusetts to Virginia. At first it was for economic reasons, plus the advantage of a milder winter, but now I've decided it's like a calling - Virginia needs more liberal democrats! I can go down there and prove that living in a state that allows civil rights for ALL doesn't destroy marriages - my husband and I are going on 19 years.

13. We're moving, too
From Virginia BACK to New England.

The winters are half-way between real winters and no winters, the congested northern part of VA is pretty blue (but if you live inthe country like we do it's like having 10,00 Dan Qualye's as neighbors), there are more Type A personalities here than anyone would want to meet in a lifetime, and my wife and I are going on 30 years.

We stayed for almost 8 years, and (sorry to say) I won't miss it for a minute.

I hope you all do MUCH better than we did.

12. Let me check my calendar - nope, it's really 2005
Unless of course you live (like I do) in Virginia.

I am counting the days until I see this state in my rear view mirror - for good.

I would say I am surprised, but I'm not.

Don't get mad at me when I paint all of you by the actions of your REPRESENTATIVE legislators - sorry...

15. What if Jesus was gay?
He never married. He was never know to date. I wonder what these lunatic fairy tale believing hate filled bigots found out that their idol was a homosexual?

I wonder what they would think if they found out on their day of reckoning!
