Rumsfeld to press allies on Iraq
US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld is due in the French city of Nice for meetings on Wednesday and Thursday with his Nato counterparts. He is expected to urge other Nato countries to contribute more to the military effort in Iraq. The transatlantic military alliance was severely strained by the American-led invasion of Iraq.

Some Nato countries, notably France and Germany, said they would have nothing to do with operations in Iraq. Spain initially sent troops but then decided to pull them out. In Nice this week, Donald Rumsfeld will try to persuade Nato's more doubtful members to drop their objections and to contribute troops to a Nato mission in Iraq.

The mission is supposed to be training officers for the Iraqi armed forces. It should number 300 personnel from Nato countries but there are fewer than 100 on the ground so far.

4. Wasn't that Kerry's plan? He talked about getting other countries
involved. He could have done it but I doubt Rummy can. The EU knows we have dibs on the oil. They have nothing to gain and everything to lose.

I hope they send him packing.

12. The US is going to find that it's blown a lot of its good will w/Europe
and has lost credibility. To waltz in now and demand that this country have more democracy, and that country get over its anger w/the US, and some other country become more involved in Iraq is an international flight of fancy, not to mention a complete waste of time and taxpayer dollars.
