SLC Mayor Wants Religious Diversity on City Council
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/redir.php?jid=dc65bb893cdc8497&cat=11caa946bf11fe44

Salt Lake's Mayor Rocky Anderson has found himself in the middle of another controversy. This times he says he wants more religious diversity on the city council.

All seven members of the city council are Latter-day Saints and the mayor believes that should change. A lot of people were taken aback, including the incumbent, who says he and the mayor have agreed on many issues, and a candidate who hasn't even announced she's running yet.

Rocky Anderson, Salt Lake City Mayor: "I do think the city council needs to be more diversified. Religiously, six out of seven of them are active members of the LDS church. I don't think that's reflective of our community."

Mayor Anderson says he realizes this issue of religious diversity both in the city council and state legislature is unpopular, but he's willing to take the flak to open discussion.

1. It's the least they could do. Although what could only be better
and yet impossible, is that there be NO RELIGION on a CITY COUNCIL at all. SLC's or anybody else's.

5. I wish them luck
God knows if SLC can do it in their city council, maybe, just maybe, we can do it in the US Congress.

3. Well, perhaps they could round up all 5 of the non Mormons in SLC?
How much diversity is there in SLC? I've only visited once, but it seemed to be completely focused on the Mormon church, and everyone I met was Mormon.

Just wondered.

4. Wow, Salt Lake City is being taken OVER!!!
Between the gay state senator and this, I'd say the church's stranglehold on that place is starting to weaken. I guess too many 'heathens' are moving there and changing the landscape!
