Democrats insist on the changing of voting system

14:30 2005-02-08
Attorney General Eliot Spitzer warned yesterday New York could lose $219 million in federal funds if it fails to update its aging voting system.
Spitzer called the state's failure to overhaul the system "an embarrassment" as he pressed for state-of-the-art technology to replace outdated lever machines. He also called for new Election Day registration rules to spur higher voter participation.
Computerized voter-registration rolls and the new user-friendly machines need to be in place by November next year or federal funding could dry up, Spitzer said.
The Democrat, who is running for governor next year, denied that changing the voting system favors his party, which holds a 5-to-3 enrollment advantage over Republicans, reports the New York Daily News.

3. "User friendly machines" is hardly the problem.
That's no solution.

Elliott Spitzer may be a wonderful person and public official, but it appears pretty obvious he needs to become more educated on the electronic voting problem.

His solution is no solution.

6. Kick! Cross-post this in the 2004 election results section
and ask the pros there on election reform to please send Mr Spitzer some educational materials! This is very important.

All, keep kicking this meanwhile so others will see it.

You should also cross-post in the NY section here at DU.

8. Those old lever machines work pretty well IMHO
They were designed to be tamperproof in one of the most fraud prone places in the country and by and large it has worked.

Computerized registration rolls and same day registrations on the other hand are ideas whose time has come.
