Poll: Hillary honest, doing a good job

The Associated Press

February 9, 2005, 10:42 AM EST

Almost two-thirds of New York voters see Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton as honest and trustworthy, up from 45 percent who viewed her that way just before she was elected to the Senate in 2000, an independent statewide poll reported Wednesday.

The Quinnipiac University Polling Institute survey, like other recent statewide polls, also found the former first lady beating either former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani or Gov. George Pataki in her expected bid for re-election next year. Neither of the Republicans has shown any interest yet in the Senate race and all three of them are considered potential presidential contenders in 2008.

Among New York voters, 64 percent said Clinton is honest and trustworthy, while 30 percent said she is not. In a late September 2000 Quinnipiac poll, 45 percent of New York voters rated her honest and trustworthy. At the time, 44 percent of New York voters said she was not honest and trustworthy.

The turnaround for Clinton was also reflected in her job approval rating -- 65 percent in the new poll, an all-time high for her. Her approval rating among New York voters was 38 percent five years ago.

5. funny stuff guys BUT...
Hillary is my senator, and I follow politis pretty closely, and I really couldn't tell you one major thing she's done for New York.

I believe she helped getting some of the dirty air information to the public after 9.11 that the EPA was hiding.

now she's done some things upstate to try to bring business back there, but i couldn't tell you how successful she is.

and i also couldn't tell you what she's done for the city ( where i am ). she's signed onto national bills like extended unemployment benefits. but nyc has been getting the shaft for so long. we get less per person than most other places in homeland security money, the mta system is still a mess. albany politics are as corrupt as ever, and nothing ever gets done in this state.

so i guess she's getting good support from upstate, traditionally the republican areas, and she's managed to keep her support from the city, but i don't think that means anything more than that she'll have as easier go at re-election time.

i don't think this points to a national run for president. there is still a lot of hostility towards her.

and for once i'd like a freakin candidate the repubs don't instantly have an insane hatred towards at the get go, and spend the next year spending money telling us how evil she is. find me a nice yet tough guy for a candidate. there's got to someone out there...

6. She is NOT popular here.
She needs to find a new state to carpet bag. Most of the liberals I know here are very disappointed in her since we elected her. I worked very hard to help her get in office and she has let me down at every opportunity. I hope the State Dems are smart enough to dump her before the next election.

We should take a poll here to see what DUers think of her since she was elected. I bet it would be very unfavorable.

Myself Im still sorta blase about her, but a lot of the people I know like her... and to be honest shes in Erie Co. and WNY in general more than anyone else.

Ive known several people who have gone to see her, and they say shes got the same "I care" charisma that the big dog had. Some of these people werent exactly huge fans of Hillary before seeing her. Now they at least like her, and feel shes "Ok".

Maybe NYC and Albany have the probs with her???

It's nice to see she pleases people in the Republican area's. However those people will vote for a Rudy G before they vote for Hill. The places she should be popular are full of people who feel betrayed by her.

Anyone. nI care about the IWR vote the patriot act and all of her PNAC enabling. So do many others. I guess people in the city feel more connected to national and global issues so whether or not she brings in the pork is not as important to us as going to war against the world.

11. i think that nails it on the head pretty much
i'm not sure if betrayal is the right word, but it's definitely close enough.

i know she and chuck are up against it being two dem senators in a repub congress, but it's not like i have heard of many of her ideas being shot down because they were voted down. i haven't hardly any ideas/proposals period.

ny'ers took a chance electing a former president's wife as a senator. especially one with as much baggage as she does. i wouldn't call her tenure a failure, but rather ineffectual.

i don't think any serious democratic candidate will challenge her for party nomination for senate in 2006.

14. Nah, these people will not vote for any R's
I think shes popular here because shes more reachable. She usually has 300-500 people in attendance if shes here for public speaking, and again the rest of NY outside of NYC and Albany feels pretty much ignored en total by state officials, while the bulk of our local politicos are as corrupt as if they lived in a mafia retirement village (which is what Erie and Niagara counties are).

Also not to read too much into what you said but youre wrong about this being right wing territory. Erie went blue... Now my town about 20 minutes south of Buffalo is about 70 % republican registered and it shows. But these are the places where we need to be to fight the enemy. Im joining the Masons and my wife is considering on joining the local Dems. Both of us are doing this to take the fight to them.
Masons are very strong in my town and are also very well respected. The Dems are going to completely die out if some strong willed people dont get in there and do their thing, my wife has the heart of a lion and the balls of a silverback gorilla I dont think the local righties know what they are in for!!.

sorry for the digression...

31. heh, shows what NYC knows about upstate.
There may be a lot of Republicans upstate, but there are also a lot of suffering Dems, particularly in Monroe and Erie counties. There was very little trust of Hillary in upstate, but she has done a good job of convincing people that she is right for the job and has built a strong following. And from being in NYC I can tell you that there is some dissapointment in her in the city, but by in large she still has huge support there.

I'm living upstate (in Warren County) and have been noticing a leftward trend in a lot of local public opinion polls. I can't speak for Giuliani in the senatorial races, but I KNOW most of the staunch Republicans here would never vote for Pataki again in the governor's race. We're set to have an amazing governor (Eliot Spitzer) and AG (RFK, Jr.) if things keep trending this way. Even if Giuliani runs for gov or senate, it will still be close.

ON EDIT: RFK not running, so methinks Andrew Cuomo has his work cut out for him.

Here is a link to tons of her accomplishments. Maybe they aren't sexy enough to make the front pages every day, but they count.

One in particular that is good for me personally is the library telecommunications funding. I am a librarian and I know that our budgets are up against the wall. This funding will help us:

maybe i am jaded against ny politicians, as all they seem to do in the city is talk about the problems during the day, go to a fundraiser at night, get driven out of town later that evening, and forget about us in the morning...

but that's good news for LI schools. that's a real accomplishment.
thanks for the info, sexy or not!

Everything points to her being quite popular and winning reelection in a walk.

And if you polled DUers, you'd get a high unfavorable rating for Jesus Christ and Mahatma Gandhi. There are a huge number of people here who are impossible to please.

13. But that won't happen, friend.
"and for once i'd like a freakin candidate the repubs don't instantly have an insane hatred towards at the get go, and spend the next year spending money telling us how evil she is. find me a nice yet tough guy for a candidate. there's got to someone out there..."

I understand your point of view on that, but it's impossible for me to believe that the Republicans will abandon the tactics that have succeeded for them on some occasions. The Democrats could nominate somebody as chaste as Lucretia, as financially successful as George Soros, as charismatic as JFK, as honest as the late Paul Simon, and it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference. The smear campaigns would go into action, and they'd probably try to take each strength of the candidate and make it into a liability. That's their MO, as described in a recent issue of The Washington Monthly. (See the "Tilting at Windmills" column).

Granted, not all Republicans go for the smear campaigns, but the leadership currently does, and don't expect anything different for the time being. The GOP is aggressive, cocky, ruthless, paranoid, and resentful, and we know how they operate. Don't expect them to cut any of our candidates any slack. Read "The Hammer" by Jan Reid and Lou Dubose and see what I mean.

48. Speaking from upstate...
She's very present and visible up here -- such a change from being ignored by senators for so long. She does a lot of small stuff: helping get upstate cheese into bigger markets and so on. She comes and speaks often, and I know people who have been able to have her ear for extended periods, and have actually felt listened to. She's the kind of person who remembers your name once she's been introduced to you.

Whether she's accomplished anything BIG I can't say -- but who has done anything much under the Repub lock on the Senate and the House? I like the thing on verified voting she's putting forth with Boxer.

I too wish she hadn't compromised so much with the Dark Side, but better her in office than that creep Lazio.
