LAKE KATHRYN, Fla. - A sheriff's deputy responding to a domestic violence report was shot to death Wednesday and two others were wounded, officials said.


Residents were warned to stay indoors as officers searched for the suspect after the confrontation at a home in the Ocala National Forest.


The suspect, Jason Lee Wheeler, escaped on a motorcycle, which was later found ditched, said Nick Pallitto, a spokesman for the Lake County Sheriff's Office. His girlfriend told deputies that Wheeler has an arsenal of weapons and his property might be booby-trapped, authorities said.


Deputy Wayne Koester died after being transferred to a hospital, Pallitto said. The two other deputies, Tom McKane and Bill Crotty, were being treated at a hospital for wounds in the leg.

owned some swampland in Ocala (which is richy-rich with lots of thoroughbred horse money)...


i can tell you, people down there are FERAL!. always have been -- with or without drugs -- with or without the clash of economic clusters: Florida CRACKERS are seriously tenacious.

living in the sticks out there is serious business. everything will KILL you. it's not nice, happy nature like the Smokey Mountain. my experience is trailer-dwellers down there are largely unmedicated with pyscho-social tendencies... it's a survival strategy for living along side of a gazillion poinsonous everythings on top of the heat. bugs and humidity.

i'm amazed we don't have video every single day from central florida.
