Kerry Donates $1 Million to DNC
Kerry Donates $1 Million to DNC
By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer

Wednesday, February 9, 2005

(02-09) 09:37 PST Washington, DC (AP) --

Sen. John Kerry is contributing $1 million to the Democratic National Committee to support efforts by the next chairman, Howard Dean, in building grassroots support for the party at the state level.

"Join me with a contribution of your own to show the incoming DNC chair that you want to support organizing in your own community," Kerry wrote in an e-mail to about 3 million supporters on his e-mail list.

"A new DNC chair will be elected at the end of this week," Kerry wrote of his onetime political rival. "Let's make sure he has everything he needs to start strong."

Kerry said Democrats need to have strong organizations at the state, local and precinct levels. Republicans were very effective at grassroots organizing in the last election.

7. Why?
All he did was donate the money that had been donated to him. It's not like Kerry reached into his pocket to make a "real" donation.

4. Well, I for One Appreciate It
and strangely enough this has to come from Dean's competitor in the primaries. Good move, John!

What concerns me are the recent statements about the chairman not setting policy. The implication is that congressmen, senators, and insiders are the ones who should set policy.

I would argue that the state organizations should have more influence. I think this what Dean will do and why he got so much support. He knows his constituency.

10. To put it in perspective...
Kerry just transfered $4 million left over from his 2004 Presidential bid to his 2008 Senate re-election campaign. According to the Washington Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A55386-2005Feb1.html

The transfer left Kerry at the end of last year with $9.8 million of the $254.2 million he raised during the Democratic primaries in the first half of 2004. He also had $5.2 million in his legal and accounting fund, and $811,104 left over from the general election campaign, which was financed with $75 million in federal funds.

Gore ended the 2000 campaign with a little over $6 million in his GELAC (legal fund). He donated all of it in 2004. He donated $4 million to the DNC, plus $1 million each to the DSCC (the Dem Senate Campaign Committe) and the DCCC (the Dem Congressional Campaign Committee) plus $250,000 to the TN State party and $240,000 to the FL state party.

17. precisely my beef...
Unused campaign funds should be refunded! Or simply rolled up to the national party. Every time I hear about 'what he's doing with it' I get mad.
