Leaders undisturbed by his possible ties to Constitution Party

MONTGOMERY -- Despite speculation that Constitution Party ties might hurt his chances with the GOP, former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore would likely be accepted onto the Republican ballot if he runs for office, according to several GOP leaders.

Moore, who has been linked to the Constitution Party, has said he is considering a bid for governor in 2006 and that he would probably run as a Republican. He was ousted as chief justice in 2003 after de fying a federal judge's order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the state judicial building.

"We can't see why there would be any question whether he is a Republican," said Jessica Quinn, Moore's spokeswoman.

As evidence, Quinn pointed out that Moore was elected chief justice on the Republican ticket and that he frequently speaks to GOP groups all over the country. He is also working with three Alabama Republicans in Congress in his effort to curb federal judges' jurisdiction over public acknowledgments of God.

I would say he's "out-of-touch" with the majority, which he is, but that doesn't seem to be stopping the wheel from turning. I am from Michigan and am currently living in Alabama, and it wouldn't be at all suprising to see someone like him do decent in an election... but then again, I haven't been to Alabama in a LONG LONG time.

All Georgians make fun of people from Alabama. I disagree. I've had several neighbors from Al., and they were great prople. Not every Baman is crazy. I relly feel bad for those who aren't.

I don't know what it's like in Al. but here in Ga, most of the nuts are in the areas outside of Atlanta and Savanna. Seems like most people in or near the few larger cities we have are more aware of what's going on. The people in the small towns are still living in the ....19th century.

our incumbent Republican governor, Bob Riley, in the primary. Riley pissed off his party by proposing a huge tax increase for education.

A recent poll showed Moore leading Riley. Moore has won statewide office before, polling more than 800,000 votes when he ran for chief justice.

The likely Democratic candidate is Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley.

Moore is a very polarizing figure in Alabama. Some people love him a lot and others think he's a cheap demagogue using religion to increase his power. Interestingly, that latter group includes some Republicans, conservatives, and fundamentalist Christians.

He might very well win, but it's not guaranteed. It depends a lot on the state GOP leadership, which isn't crazy about Moore, and who we nominate to oppose him.

take down the republicans in Alabama. The man is a walking scandal-magnet. He is a bizarre wildcard, and no one can really predict what he will do.

This will be almost as good as when a former Alabama repukelican governor, Guy Hunt (also a "preacher") was removed from office over a "love gift". (No, that wasn't THAT kind of gift--it was some sort of "tithe". The radical Christian types have some strange names for things. The word "love" frequently appears in their conversation--how ironic is THAT? Example: remember when Junior Bush referred to ob-gyn doctors "practicing their love on their patients".)

The word on the street (the street being people in the party) is that Sessions will run for Gov and Moore will run for Senate.
Personally I think he has worse chances for Gov. since most rednecks don't take kindly to police officers being stationed infront of their watering holes, something that very well might happen with Moore.
Personally, none of the Reps. I am friends with would vote for him... they all think he is crazy. Something even they think is a disqualifying factor.

I don't see Sessions running for governor. I doubt he could beat Riley in the primary. Whoever runs against Riley is going to have to be popular enough to overcome the crossover votes from Democrats who will turn out to vote for Riley in the GOP primary.

we voted for The Big Dawg in 1992. You just have to give us a candidate who'll actually come here and campaign and speaks our language. Kerry came across as a stiff, wishy-washy New Englander, that's what hurt him. Edwards did well here because he's a great communicator and I beleive if the ticket were reversed, it may have made a difference.
