WASHINGTON – President Bush will ask Congress for $950 million to support the areas affected by the Asian tsunami, more than doubling his previous commitment, the White House said Wednesday.
Bush already has pledged $350 million in federal funds to the relief effort.
The new request would include reimbursing the Defense Department and U.S. Agency for International Development for money already provided to help the region, and for assistance in the longer term.
"We will use those resources to provide assistance and to work with the affected nations on rebuilding vital infrastructure, re-emerging economies and to strengthen their societies," said Alan P. Larson, undersecretary of state for economic, business and agricultural affairs.
