China executes two hundred people in last 2 weeks
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big News Network.com Wednesday 9th February, 2005

China rushed through 200 executions in the past two weeks in advance of the lunar new year.

In December and January the number of excutions reported in local media topped 650, although that number could be much higher as China does not release details of all executions.

"There is a huge gap between policy and practice with regard to the death penalty in China," said Catherine Baber, Deputy Asia Director at Amnesty International. "While the government claims that the death penalty is applied cautiously, the ritual peak in executions we’re witnessing at the moment completely undermines any pretence of ‘caution’."

"Moreover, there is the very real concern that a number of those executed may have been innocent: China’s justice system is simply not sound enough to guarantee a fair trial."

Wow thats a bunch of executions!!!

21. The site has an integrated forum, no separation from news
This site is poorly identified, and has its reply system set up like a discussion board. Again, more investigation required...

4. Is that how they keep their unemployment rates low.
We'd better keep watch that B* doesn't use this method to cut down on our unemployment rates. It sure could inhibit people from filing for benefits.

22. Gallows humor
It comes after outrage and after the frustration that no one is doing anything to stop it. The gallows humor is another way to vent the frustration that our leaders are looking the other way and still granting China a Most Favored Trade status and allowing American companies outsource there.

The humor is another way to express our anger and frustration at this administration for doing nothing about these human rights violations, not even imposing sanctions because that might lose them the support of their wealthy contributors.

I don't think anyone is callous to the plight of these people, just helpless to do anything about it.

5. Will the death penalty ever go away?
I just don't understand how people who claim they are religious, like the right-wing crazies do, can justify the death penalty.

Even here in California, I don't understand why we still have the death penalty.

13. Abolish the Death Penalty
As they do to the least of these, the poor, the needy, the prisoners, they have done unto Jesus. The death penalty is totally hypocritical of true Christianity. Especially considering over 20,000 Americans are wrongfully convicted each year in the U.S..
Regardless, *ush refused DNA testing for NUMEROUS death-penalty cases .
There's not much justice, ANYWHERE in the world. China, America, Iraq...

29. Against the death penalty and abortion
I may be in the minority here but I am against the death penalty and also against abortion. I don't see how you can be for one and against the other no matter which you think is ok or wrong.

And thanks to the Republican deficits and expensive failed oil wars China is going to overtake us.

Think about the future when in 10 or 20 years China has the permanent seats in the U.N. and are overtly (and not just covertly) ordering us around.

7. What could be so heinous there...
to deserve capital punishment?

I had a newsclip of one story years ago about some Chinese managers who were executed for dictating shoddy workmanship and quality in a plant. I enlarged it and posted it in my cube. I had to take it down....LOL

15. China is advancing.
They are actually having juries now to judge guilt or not guilty. Before all were guilty, no jury, only an attorney to plead regarding sentence. The Death Penalty is barbaric and should be abolished in all nations.

19. We in the good old, moral and upright, US
are hardly blameless either.
Consider this: the entire US population is only 22% of China's population. 59 US inmates were executed last year - factor in the population differential and that gives you the equivalent of 268 executed here, with many more waiting in the wings.
