Bill would limit 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy

SACRAMENTO BEE

February 10, 2005

SACRAMENTO – The Pentagon's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy for gays and lesbians in the military wouldn't apply to members of the California National Guard governed by state law if legislation introduced yesterday is passed.

Senate Bill 181 by Sen. Carole Migden, D-San Francisco, would cover about 1,000 members with state commissions; an additional 19,000 are under federal jurisdiction.

Migden said gay and lesbian National Guard personnel with state commissions "could be who they are," without fear of discrimination, if her bill becomes law.

2. This is a good sentiment that won't work
I don't doubt for a second that the Bush Pentagon would issue federal commissions to any gay/lesbian National Guardspeople serving under California state commission so they could kick 'em out in a way that would prevent California from re-commissioning them.

Because this is the kind of shit they pull.

3. Interesting.
Would this effectively block the federal activation of CNG personnel who were openly gay? Their federal activation would intrinsically violate the "tell" provisions of the (stupid, insane, detestible) DADT regulations.

4. This could be dangerous.
Is this the opening to being able to draft gay people when the time comes?

5. They Will Do That Anyway
The government wants to punish gay people for being gay.

That means that if they want to be in the Army, they throw them out,
and if they don't want to be in the Army, they'll draft them anyway.

8. I have no doubt they will pull this.
They will pretend to be "tolerant" all of a sudden, while they really just want to send gay people to die in the front lines.

The only reason they wouldn't do it would be if the Xian-right oppose it so much.

7. ...how is that bad
i mean, drafting is a bad idea all around, and i sure as hell dont want to see ANYONE drafted, but if i have to have a draft card, than why wouldn't a gay person as well?

6. They are just getting rid of that loophole in the draft that lets you
out if you are gay. bushco needs all the cannon fodder
that they can get. but if one identifies oneself as gay
they might get sent to the frontlines by the homophobic
republican administration.
