Bill would add 'Under God' to auto plates

By Laura A. Bischoff
Dayton Daily News

COLUMBUS |

"More than 50 years after it was added to the Pledge of Allegiance, "One Nation Under God" may soon be on Ohio specialty license plates."

"State Sen. Bob Spada, R-North Royalton, and Rep. Tom Patton, R-Strongsville, today will introduce bills to add a "One Nation Under God" license plate to the 70-plus different specialty plates Ohioans motorists can purchase."

<snip> (Describes the various types of vanity plates now available)

"What about God? Where does he fit in there?" Patton said.

"Patton described the proposed plate as a way to reinforce "the Judeo-Christian movement, which is the most prevalent in the country" and defend the pledge, which he believes to be under attack."

Although the phrase is on a plate issued by the state its not mandatory that you have it on YOUR car. Let people get it if they want it.

plates (IF being the operative word) -- would they be able to? Should the State be sponsoring "the Judeo-Christian movement"?

Maybe, if it's a way to make $$ it shouldn't matter.

115. The price of the plate is covered by the sales,
though I'm sure the state has to put in some money for startup costs, but this quickly becomes self-sustaining and profitable for the state. In my state, we have "Save the Manatee". I'm sure many people in my state have no interest in saving the Manatee. Even though the state now makes a profit on those plates (and brings in "extra" revenue because of it) should the people of my state be indignant that the state put in start-up money to this?

43. I love that phrase
I love it mainly because of a court case over it on license plates...

Apparently, someone got pissed off that the state would have the gaul to make prisoners put "live free or die" on the license plates they made--so he obliterated it. I don't remember whether he painted it over, beat it flat then painted it over, sanded it off, or just stuck a piece of electrical tape over it, but you couldn't see the state motto on his plates.

A couple of days later he got pulled over for tampering with his license plates.

After all the appeals went through, some very high court decided that so long as the numbers, name of the state and expiration-date information were still legible and untampered-with, you could do anything you wanted with the rest of the stuff on the plate.

10. Some of us religious folks take G-d so seriously
that we don't write it out, can't destroy something with it on it.

But then there are those who would use a newspaper with G-d on it to line the catbox or wrap fish.

The more the fundies push the inclusion of G-d in documents, license plates, etc., the less respectful they are.

Once again, the right wing victimhood mentality on display.

Poor baby. Funny though. I can't recall any atheistic messages printed on license plates.

49. I think all states should do this
In North Carolina it costs an additional $10 per year to have one of these plates--$30 extra per year if you want it personalized. We have over 8 million people in the state, and if just 100,000 of these people who didn't have specialty plates already got one set of God specialty plates, there's an instant $1 million per year flowing into the general fund.

I don't know about your state, but my state could use an extra million per year. And people would line up to pay it!

I think the numbers would be far higher--many people have more than one car (if you've got three cars and you're buying God plates, all of them would get God plates) and more than 100,000 people would buy God plates--but we'll use 100,000 applications as a baseline.

Look, the only person who's "attacking" the Pledge of Allegiance is crazy-ass Michael Newdow (who I'm certain is a Christian trying to make atheists look bad by coming up with all his bizarre shit) but if this gentleman Patton wants to get fundies to give the state an extra million a year, more power to him.

Typically a portion of the profit goes to the charitable cause it supports. Would a portion of these proceeds go to a church? Is it putting the government in the position of collecting funds for a church?

99. In this case, there is no "charitable cause"
One of two things would happen: you'd be required to list the church you go to, which would open the government to charges that they were working to collect money for religious purposes; or all of the money would go into the General Fund.

This would be the better way.

Hey, it would be more patriotic to do this than to purchase a Chinese-made Jesus Fish to put on the back of your car.

52. I guess if it's only a "special plate" why should we care.
Here in Ga. we have all kind of different special plates. Some support wildlife, a slew for vets from every war we've been in, breast cancer, special birds, etc!
http://www.dmvs.ga.gov/motor/plates/

Why do you care if this special interest group gets the opportunity to buy their own plate?

My husband's a hunter, and he pays the extra to have a plate that supports wildlife. I foster Bichon dogs, and I have the support spay and neuter plate.

I just don't care if these folks want to spend a little extra to have a plate they want.

I sure as hell wouldn't get one, but hey, if they're willing to pay the state extra money, then we damn well need it.

I mean, it's not putting it on ALL plates, just one individual vanity plate.

edit: though i do think that it is not cool for the state to be ONLY putting out a fundie plate

My favorite quote: "What about God? Where does he fit in there?"

How about in the privacy of your own home or church, asshole.

Why do we have to have "God" forced down our throats. We know where he is...if we're interested, we'll find him.

I am so sick of this shit. Keep your God to yourself.

Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 03:53 PM by hnsez
you could market all kinds of superior products with the words "in god we trust" printed on them:

colostomy bags
condoms
bra straps
decorative blocks to hold up mobile homes
tires
tubes of denture glue
toilet plungers
disposable diapers

The Reverend Billy C. Wirtz told me so

94. Actually, such plates would benefit me
as I would then know who NOT to buy firewood from...lawn services, tree cutting, etc. Don't solicit my business with one of those plates. It's a sign to me that you don't respect the U.S. Constitution and my forefathers(mothers) commitment to a country free from religious oppression. So, go ahead. That will help me winnow out who I give my money. Discrimination? Yes. I patronize businesses which respect our American heritage...and that doesn't include nationalism and fundamentalism.

101. The pledge is under attack?
What a colossal crock of shit. If anything, those us who want "under god" removed from the pledge are the true pledge traditionalists - we're trying to return it to its original form. The "under god" was added as a response to the Red Scare, same time our national motto was changed from E Pluribus Unum to that god fetish nonsense.

WHY WHY WHY OH WHY do they feel it's necessary to plaster everything they own with their Jesus (tm)-paraphernalia? Is their faith so weak that it'll falter and die if they're ever exposed to a day without the sight of God (tm) Merchandise? Why must we all, whatever our private beliefs, be forced into unwilling collusion with theirs by having it forced on us as a national motto, in our national pledge of allegiance, on our fucking MONEY, everywhere we go?
