Kline introduces bill to put Reagan on $50 bill
http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/news/politics/10868564.htm?1c

Rep. John Kline wants former President Ronald Reagan to adorn $50 bills, where we would replace Ulysses S. Grant, a Civil War general who went on to become president.

Kline, who served as a military aide to Reagan, said the former president "was guided by unwavering principles and a steadfast character."

14. HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT!!!
US Grant believed in Civil Rights and a Balanced Budget. US Grant not only had the Civil Rights Act of 1871 Passed (The Anti-KKK Act) but also the Civil Rights Act of 1875 which had it NOT been struck-ed down by the Supreme Court in the 1880s would have done almost everything (Except for discrimination against women) that was done when the 1964 Civil Rights Act was passed.

A brief description of the Civil Rights Acts:

Doesn't matter to me if it's a drunk or a senile dementia patient on the $50 bill, neither one gets my respect. Since Reagan's administration was so often compared to Grant's -- as in, "The Reagan administration is the most corrupt since U.S. Grant" then it seems appropriate to me. Better this than the dime.

26. Since I don't recall ever seeing an actual
$50 bill, this would at least be preferable to putting him on some currency that gets used frequently. I fear St. Ronnie's appearance on some sort of legal tender is inevitable. Plus, bills are much easier to deface than coins!

(Defacing money is illegal, and I recommend that you never, ever do such a thing.)

55. SPENDING defaced money is illegal, not unless you try and alter
it's value.
http://www.lawforkids.org/speakup/view_question.cfm?id=407

Answer: There is no law or statute against simply writing on a cash bill. For instance, it is not against the law to draw giant red lips on George Washington's portrait on the front of a One Dollar Bill.

However defacing currency with the intent to alter the bill to gain a benefit is illegal. If someone alters a written instrument (such as a check) without permission and with the intent to gain a benefit, then it is called forgery, which is a crime. If one tried to alter a cash bill (like changing a $5 bill to a $20 bill) for the purpose of presenting the altered bill to gain a benefit, then that could be considered a forgery. Forgery of United States Currency in this manner is called counterfeiting and carries with it very stiff penalties.

I'll never underdstand how that ass got reelected.

If Teresa Daly (his opponent in 2004 for those of you not in Minnesota) had been smart the only ad she would have had to run was one using Kline's quote about how the issues he worked on were "too complex for the average housewife in Burnsville to understand." I know several women (Republicans included) who nearly exploded when they heard that.

53. You don't understand: they never pay back
As Junior's brother-in-law likes to say: "I just want my fair share, which is all of it."

There is no reciprocity from this mob, and that's something that even a sharp guy like Clinton will never understand. They will not play fair. They will demand their way, force their way, TAKE their way, and complain about how they're being ill-treated. He tried to play nice with them, and still does, hoping that they'll call off the dogs someday, but they never will.

You need look no further than the judicial appointments; they sat on so many during Clinton's time that a crisis brewed, and when they rammed through virtually all of Junior's nazis, even that wasn't enough for them.

Liberalism is based upon the understanding that different beliefs deserve to coexist; conservatism defines anything different as unholy and deserving of nothing short of destruction. They'll give you nothing for your kindness except renewed efforts to take even more from you.

This is no joke.

trillion dollar bill (cash value 1/100 cent).

Let's print up a bunch of them, pay off our creditors (except SS) with them ("Keep the change.") and pass out the rest as souvenirs.

Fiscal irresponsibility of Reaganite proportions should not be rewarded. And one can argue that without Reagan's peacetime fiscal irresponsibility, our current fiscal irresponsibility would have, at least, proven much more difficult, if not impossible.

51. Grant wasn't a great president, but he was a BRILLIANT general
Bitter Southerners will never accept this, but he was a much better commander than Lee: he understood maneuver, communications and logistics in a way that a talented tactical field commander like Lee never could. Add to this that Grant was a fabulous tactical commander, and there's no comparison. He's been tarred as a attritionist, but that completely discounts most of his campaigns and simply plays into the ongoing myth of the Southern superiority.

Boy do I know this; I have family on both sides and am descended from notables from each army. The South's collective self-image of manhood was trampled because they thought they were superior, and they have yet to get over it.

Reagan was a serviceable actor, a mob tool as an adminstrator of SAG and a mean thug for privilege as president. He excelled at nothing, whereas Grant (along with Sherman) was a towering figure in the history of warfare, and ushered in the modern era of generalship in ways that are only now being acknowledged.

58. Thank you for this wonderful post
Even here on DU there are far too many people who buy into the myth of "Grant the butcher" or who fail to realize that -- contrary to the popular saw that "history is written by the winners" -- the South has been writing America's Civil War history since 1865.

People who parrot the "Grant the butcher" meme should be forced to explain the difference between the Vickbsurg and Gettysburg campaigns.

They should also be asked to identify the Civil War general who suffered higher casualty rates than US Grant (hint: it was Robert E. Lee).

They should also be asked to identify the Civil War general who, when he ran out of ideas, continued to rely on suicidal frontal assaults after Grant and Sherman had figured out such tactics were hopeless (hint: it was Robert E. Lee).

Your idea that the South's collective self-image of manhood was trampled is fascinating to me, one that I had never heard or considered before, but it seems to me, now that I hear it, to get closer to the heart of the matter than any other explanation I have yet heard. Very well done!

66. Well, hot damn!
Vicksburg was absolutely masterful: it was maneuver, bluff and control of initiative par excellence. The mere mention of that campaign brings joy to my heart.

There were plenty of good commanders on both sides who've been overblown or unfairly dismissed. One of my blood kin (John Bell Hood) is shockingly overrated, while another (Joseph E. Johnson) was underrated and badly misused due to the idiocy of Jeff Davis. Lee is lauded, while Forrest is arguably the greatest commander of the entire war. (Hell, he's one of the best of all time, period.) Meade is forgotten, although he won Gettysburg, and even though Lincoln was annoyed by him, Grant retained him as a key Corps commander. Nobody ever talks about Thomas, but he was a true stalwart. Sherman is only remembered as a looter, when he was a true genius of modern warfare.

It goes on and on; I can hardly think of a war that has more key players more misrepresented. Mercifully, Davis was an arrogant fool and the South died by its own sword.

Glad we're in accord; there's hope yet.

likes to flash 50s is my ex. I like the 20s, the common man's currency.

69. Grant was a far better servent of his country than Reagan.
However, Republicans don't give two shits about history.

76. A reminder Reagan's budget deficits will ultimately mean a $50 bill
will be needed to purchase what once a buck would once buy?

77. Reagan should be on the $1000 bill.
I saw a really cool letter to the editor in my paper. A guy said, "Reagan should be on the $1000 bill. That way, the people for whom he and the Republican party worked so hard can see him all the time, and the rest of us don't have to."

78. please NO....
I'd rather prefer Grant, whose administration had been the most corrupt in U.S. history (Until W. Bush), but who at least had his Civil War glory to his name.

It's already bad enough that Reagan's got an airport and carrier with his name on it. He was a horrible President, from the domestic side of things...and he was hated around the world, especially the browner parts of the Third World...

Not something we should be immortalizing in our currency...Kennedy, FDR, the Founders, Abe Lincoln...yeah...that's the America I want to belong to...but not to Reagan.

79. I just thought of somethign...
there's a good way to protest this, if it occurs...simply take every $50.00 dollar bill you have...and mark it with a Hitler Mustache, and write "Seig Heil" under it.

If everyone that opposes it does that, there will be a stream of $50.00 out there making a political statement for us all the time...

Even Republicans will have to proudly hold their Hitler Reagans...hahaha...cause no one will throw away $50.00!
