More Than 4 Million in Mid-Atlantic Without Power (Biggest Damg Ever)
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A33838-2003Sep19.html

Washington area power systems suffered the greatest storm damage in their history from Hurricane Isabel, and it may take a week before electricity is fully restored, local utility companies said at midday today after initial surveys of the wreckage.

More than 1.1 million households and businesses were without power in the D.C. region, after the storm knocked down trees and transmission lines. Millions more were without power elsewhere in the mid-Atlantic region.

Officials of Pepco, which serves 700,000 customers in the District and several Maryland suburbs, dispatched crews to survey damage before dawn. They returned with a bleak assessment: the system was largely in tatters. With more than two-thirds of their customers without power--including 225,000 in Montgomery County alone--company officials predicted it could easily take a week before electricity is fully restored.

George R. Gacser, Pepco's emergency manager, broke the bad news to workers at the command center in a briefing early this morning. "The thing to remember," he told them, "is this is the largest storm we've ever had. This is the majority of our customers. It's going to be hectic today."

8. What is the NG going to do to restore power?
My experiance, and it is considerable, is that the NG just gets in the way most of the time when they try to help line crews.

Tree crews and line crews from outside the affected area are a lot more help.

11. I don't know...
Even if it stays intact, it's going to need a massive scrubbing (and de-shrubbing) before Jan. 2005. Maybe we should start a bleach drive. The gov't. will need our help to pay for disinfecting that place.

12. I still think that Hurricane (now Tropical Storm?) Isabel has ...
links to Al Qaida. Or could it be Saddam?

20. I feel for you too..
We spent a week with downed trees and no power back in March caused by the ice storm. We had to pack up and move in with the mom and dad. The cats survived the fish froze. Husband caught pneumonia a week later from being out in the weather cutting down the two trees that fell in the driveway. It was a mess.. I guess you can look at the bright side.. you don't have the cold to worry about.

13. Don't worry folks, Bush already fled
Weekending in Camp David, where I'm sure the electricity is on its own circuit to keep the beer nice and cold. Look for Shrubbie to come out of his hidey hole after the worst is over and tell us all what a hardship we've been through.
