Fla. Newborn Tossed From Car Doing Well
Broward County's sheriff said Friday he hopes that the people who threw a newborn boy out of a moving car are feeling remorse and will come forward.

Investigators are trying to identify the couple who threw the boy, believed to be less than an hour old, alongside a busy street Thursday afternoon, Sheriff Ken Jenne said. The car then sped away.

1. Just saw a TV program about an infant abandoned in zero degree temps
Apparently someone (possibly the child's father) had second thoughts and called the police. Baby was under a pavilion, in a park. Cops got there just in time.

Oddly enough, the child, now a young woman, wants to find these two and "put her family back together."

2. Good thing Florida doesn't allow gays to adopt.
One man and one woman are clearly the only people who can properly care for an infant.

4. The couple is to be commended. They allowed the fetus
to go full term -- Praise the Lord!-- then resorted to their version of Republican "family planning".

6. Yes - always better to toss an infant out of the car than abort!

8. Well they don't want to go to hell for aborting a fetus when they can't
afford to raise a baby. Makes some sort of strange fundie
sense.

7. Florida has a safe haven law. Drop off the baby, no
questions asked, no further responsibility.

It's not like the mother/father had only the choices of aborting the kid, killing it, or having their life turned into a living hell by rearing the the kid.

10. But did they KNOW about the "Safe Haven Law"?
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 01:38 PM by BiggJawn
This law is NOT one of the most publicized laws on the books, y'know.

I just found out TODAY that we have such a law in Indiana, which given our Legislature's world-wide reputation as "The World's Worst Legislature" shocked the hell out of me...

Guess they manage to actually get some REAL work done while they debate Daylight Savings Time....

20. New York too
We have this law too. VERY publicized. Still hasn't stopped young women from drowning them in toilet bowls or stuffing them in garbage dumps.

I shudder to think how many more there will be if legal abortion is ended.

23. Don't know if it was well publicized in Florida; they usually were,
but I doubt teenagers would pay attention.

Odd that abandoning the kid didn't cross their mind, but dumping him (her?) out of a moving car did.

I have to wonder how many young couples got jacked-up by Johnny Law in the meantime...Roadside pelvic exams, anyone?

Sure hope nobody got Stock-Prodded.

14. No, but the point is, if you really don't want it (a baby)
so much so that you are willing to kill it after it is born, shouldn't we make abortion a viable option so it never gets this far? I mean, you have this, you have the teenagers who forced a miscarriage with a baseball bat, you have several babies left in dumpsters every year.

You have people who don't want a kid and yet our society treats abotion as so shameful, and put so many roadblocks in the way of getting one (parental consent, 24 hour waiting period, not covered by many health insurances, etc.) that somehow these people concluded that it was LESS shameful to throw a baby out of a car than to have an abortion.

Where is the moral compass in that? We need to make it an available, acceptable choice for those who are so desperate not be parents that they would resort to this inhumanity.

the news about safe haven laws should not be on tv or newspapers but on the walls of the local high schools.

11. Mother Who Tossed Newborn Out of Car Found

Feb 11, 12:39 PM EST

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- The mother of a newborn boy who survived being tossed out of a moving car has been identified and interviewed by investigators, authorities said Friday.

"It is my belief ... that this person is the birth mother of the child," Broward County Sheriff Ken Jenne told reporters.

The sheriff also said that the interview with the unidentified woman "puts a whole new light on this story" but he gave no specifics. A news conference was planned for later in the day to provide more details........

15. puts a whole new light on this story??? - Black male/white girl is no
longer being reported.

Nor is a male with an Afro

And the AP has dropped the female passenger with braids

And that they were "arguing."

Indeed the "older model white sedan, perhaps a Ford Crown Victoria" is no longer in the story.

As time goes on the less we are told.

curious.

I am betting that 90% of the first reports were wrong!

19. Unless the cops deliberately planted false info in the press
to flush out the culprits.

I rememember a trial where a tape was played of two armored car robbers laughing about how wrong--and stupid--the police and media reports were about how everything had gone down. It turns out that's exactly what the cops had wanted them to do!

makes up a story like that is clearly un-balanced. At least she didn't kill them like Andrea Yates, for instance.

God only knows what horror the other children might have experienced with a mentally ill mother.
