VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Paris Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger, a Jewish-born convert and adviser to the ailing Pope John Paul, will officially resign and be replaced by a former close aide, the Vatican said on Friday.
Archbishop of Tours Andre Vingt-Trois was named the new Paris prelate, which could lead in coming months to a meeting to elevate him and other archbishops to the College of Cardinals.
The 84-year-old Pontiff left Rome's Gemelli hospital on Thursday after 10 days of treatment for breathing difficulties. Announcing such an important nomination was a signal the Vatican was running normally despite the Pope's health problems.
Lustiger, whose mother was killed at Auschwitz, represented the Pope on Jan. 27 at ceremonies on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp in Poland.
