MSNBC: Story of Tossed Baby A Fabrication
Story of tossed baby a fabrication
Sheriff: Depressed mother made up horrifying tale

BREAKING NEWS
MSNBC
Updated: 3:22 p.m. ET Feb. 11, 2005

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Authorities said Friday that the story of a newborn boy who survived being thrown out of a moving car was made up by a depressed woman.

The 8-pound, 2-ounce boy, who was believed to be less than an hour old and whose umbilical cord was still attached when he came into the custody of authorities on Thursday, was in good condition at a hospital in Fort Lauderdale.

Broward County Sheriff Ken Jenne said at a news conference Friday afternoon that the boy was “absolutely perfect.” Nurses at the hospital have nicknamed him Johnny after the doctor who first treated him Thursday, he said.

Jenne said the baby was taken to a local sheriff’s office Thursday by a woman who said she saw it being tossed from a moving car, wrapped in plastic. She claimed that a man and a woman were arguing in the car at the time, he said.

In fact, “the situation is not as horrible as we thought,” he said. “The baby was not ever thrown out of the car.”

6. Which was the stupid media outlet that ran with the story?
I swear, somebody's pay should be docked for doing such a shabby job of "reporting". Or is that what we can only expect these days--fake, unchecked stories?

19. Oooooh! CNN! That's where that oh-so-credible Wolfie Blitzer is!
He's the one that interviewed Howie Kurtz and "Jeff Gannon" and pushed the idea that Gannongate is all about how evil "liberal bloggers" unfairly invaded poor Jim-Jeff-Guckert-Gannon's privacy as persecution for his political beliefs! Mean, nasty liberal bloggers! Yup, that's all that's worth talking about in this story, and the human-interest-ness of it all were emphasized by the way Jim-Jeff-Guckert-Gannon's eyes teared up while he told his obviously totally and completely true, valid, and double-fact-checked story to super-reporter Wolfie Blitzer.

Yup, CNN -- we can be safe believing every word they say!

21. I heard this sherrif on TV--I was not impressed with him at all. He seeme

more interested in finging something to charge the women with than with the babe. talked of how lots of people wanted to adopt the baby.
I see the baby is white.

......Florida law would have protected mother
......Jenne visited Johnny in the hospital and said Pokriots’ initial story had raised troubling questions. “What have we come to as a society and a community?” he asked.

But in this case, that question had a welcome answer, Jenne said: “The one great thing that comes out of this is there is a great love for this child, this Johnny.”

Jenne stressed that the incident need not have happened, noting that Florida had a “safe harbor law” allowing a mother leave her baby at any medical facility or fire station within three days, no questions asked.

“If Patricia had done this, we would not be here today,” he said, but it was not yet clear whet.......her she knew about the law.

23. She probably did NOT know about the law...
They spend a buttload more money reminding you to pay your poor tax...Uh, buy Lotto tckets every week than they do publicizing something like that law...

I suspect that the Fetus-Lovers have some reason to keep these "safe Haven" laws hushed up. Wonder what it could be....

32. I thought I heard that they aren't going to charge her with anything
because I guess technically she followed Florida's "safe haven" law. And it sounds like she is deeply troubled, so I too hope she gets the help she needs.

26. forget the stupid story. there's a bigger story... the safe harbor law in
Florida that allows a newborn to be left at any firestation during the first three days after birth without any penalty. perhaps focusing on this law will help future mothers of unwanted children.

27. This women has an untreated mental illness
They said as much on the CNN report.

She either didn't understand that law or was so whacked out she thought this was easier.

It will be interesting to hear more about her circumstances. Is she poor? Why did she blame black people? She apparently thought that was believable.

How sad. We really neglect our children by not treating mental illness & drug addiction, and essentially ignoring poverty.

28. Sheriff: Mother Made Up Story of Baby Thrown From Car
http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/florida/news-article.aspx?storyid=32386

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL -- The woman who claimed to have seen a baby being tossed from a moving car fabricated the story to cover up a pregnancy and birth she had been trying to conceal, Broward County Sheriff Ken Jenne said Friday. The baby was never thrown.

"It's not as horrible as we first thought," Jenne said. "The baby was never thrown out of a moving car. This is the case of a disturbed woman who gave birth and did not want to keep her child."

Jenne said the woman, who kept her pregnancy a secret from her family and others, had planned to take the baby to authorities. She then built her story around seeing two people in a large white sedan arguing. "One story built upon the other," Jenne said.
