Gonzales Steps Aside From Investigation of CIA Leak

By Mark Sherman Associated Press Writer
Published: Feb 11, 2005

WASHINGTON (AP) - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has stepped aside from the Justice Department investigation into the leak of an undercover CIA officer's identity.
Gonzales had been involved in the case as White House legal counsel, testifying before a federal grand jury and giving advice about it to White House personnel.

He recused himself from the matter shortly after he was sworn in as attorney general last week, Justice Department spokeswoman Tasia Scolinos said Friday. Former Attorney General John Ashcroft had also removed himself from any role in the investigation.

Investigators want to find out who leaked the identity of CIA officer Valerie Plame, whose name was published in July 2003 by syndicated columnist Robert Novak. The investigation is being run by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald of Chicago, who was appointed special counsel with broad decision-making latitude and reports to Deputy Attorney General James Comey.

9. Headline is: "Gonzales Steps Aside From Investigation of CIA Leak"
Which is different from "setting aside" the CIA investigation.

Thing is, while this is a new story, I don't see any new information. The story mentions that he recused himself shortly after getting sworn in, so I can't figure out what's 'new'.

19. He steps aside just like Jebbie did in 2K
All that means is that he is "behind the scenes" where NO ONE can see what he's doing..

He can affect the investigation is sooooo many ways.. and there wioll be no trail of bread crumbs leading back to him..:(

I would rather have him involved in it so we could track what he's doing..

The Sgt. Schultz ploy works FOR the admin..

21. Just because he stepped aside
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 09:43 AM by DoYouEverWonder
doesn't mean that he's not going to be involved anymore. It reminds me of when Jeb 'stepped aside' during the 2000 election. It left a vacuum of leadership for the public and behind the scenes he was still very much involved in helping his brother's campaign.

The same thing will happen at the DOJ. Gonzalez can use this has an excuse to slink back into the shadows and still be in charge.

15. If that's the case, just use copy and paste. That's mostly what he did.
His articles were basically cut and paste from the WH press briefings.
