Seminary Ousts President For Performing Daughter's Gay Wedding
Board Doesn't Renew Contract

POSTED: 12:01 pm EST February 11, 2005

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- The New Brunswick Theological Seminary ousts its president after he officiated at his gay daughter's wedding.

(snip)

The board did not renew the 64-year-old minister's contract, saying Kansfield put the seminary in an awkward position by performing the ceremony, and his actions could have divided the school.

Kansfield told the board he planned to officiate shortly before the June 19 wedding of his daughter, Anne, but did not seek its permission.

Kansfield said he had not done anything to hurt his denomination, the Reformed Church of America.

1. If he'd had any sense he'd have told the church to take a hike.

2. Yes, how dare he
make sure his child made her lifelong declarations in public.

Hey! Was that was my marriage falling apart?

5. And they call this hateful behavior "family values"
This seminary ousted this man under the guise of religious values for loving and supporting his daughter in being in a committed relationship.

I know of no action more hypocritical than to alienate a person for loving/ supporting their family.

While there are a handful of religions that do not practice this form of hatred, they are far and few between.

9. That's exactly what went through my head when I read this...
...he is probably thinking to himself.....he would lose a thousand jobs for what he did. It's funny how people who do not understand the power of love think that their little efforts to hurt others will have any affect.

13. Yep
At a church I used to attend (PCUSA), the minister was likewise performing the ceremony for his daughter. I always thought that it was a terribly wonderful thing that he was doing, at a time when the national church organization was debating issues of ordination of gays.

11. there you go...
nothing like Christian "tolerance" in action...

This damn Christian Taliban in this country is making me ashamed to denominate as a Christian...yea yea...I know I believe in Christ's real teachings of peace, compassion, and tolerance...but it's getting hard to say "no...i'm not like THOSE Christians" to everyone else.

It's starting to feel like how Muslims in the West describe themselves (no no...i'm not one of those beheading Muslims).

Damn fanatics...

12. I don't think you can be a 'Christian' and believe in the real...
...teachings of Christ. Why you ask? Because Jesus was not (in my opinion) asking people to worship him. I think he would not approve of an Idol being made of him. His teachings (again, in my opinion) were strictly teachings for action. This action was intended to bring peace to those who suffer. As well, Jesus would not approve of any action by todays Christians that hurt others. In Jesus' day, hanging out with a prostitute (Magdalene), would probably be comparable to him Marshaling a Gay Pride Parade today. The level of awareness when it comes to Jesus' ideas is staggeringly miscalculated. It truly is bizarre.
