Jay Has Own Plan For Social Security
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 05:40 PM by Petrushka
Suggests tax cuts should fund shortfall
by Joselyn King, Political Writer

WHEELING -- U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller said in Wheeling Friday that he has a plan to shore up the future of Social Security. At the same time, he also is certain the system doesn't yet need to be fixed.

"The president has asked for ideas," said Rockefeller, D-W.Va., a member of the Senate Finance Committee. "This is a way to solve the problem of Social Security once and for all. It's incredibly simple, and it's my idea."

4. thanks-- that worked
" President Bush plans to implement $11.1 trillion in tax cuts, he said. It also is suggested by experts that adding $3.7 trillion to the Social Security system will assure its future indefinitely.

Instead of returning the money to taxpayers, Rockefeller proposes taking $3.7 trillion from funds set aside for tax cuts and putting it toward the Social Security system. This would leave about two-thirds of the money that still could be used for tax cuts and refunds."

<snip>

"As for the tax cuts, those most likely to benefit are those earning at least $300,000 annually, he said.

Only about 6,000 West Virginians receiving Social Security would qualify.

"I would be one of them," Rockefeller acknowledged. "But I think I can make it without it (the tax cut)."

Why, that's SOCIALISM! Ask the wealthy to help the working class by directing a small percentage of their tax cuts into social security?

Excellent idea.

24. The tax cuts nor the SS expense is part of Shrubs budget!
Nor is the expense of the wars that we are constantly seeking more money for!

It's insane to even discuss the SS plan, or anything else until the Feds get with the whole program! I've put many budgets together, and NEVER have I seen so many things NOT IN THE BUDGET that you already know are expenses.

I'm so disgusted with this whole Federal Government! They're all trying to scam the people.

Instead of raising taxes, he gets to cancell a planned future tax cut
and redirect the funds from 'paying for tax cuts' to 'paying to fix SSA'.

No new tax, frames tax cuts as something that has to be paid for - an expense.

He mentions it as the 4th tax cut. Perhaps the expensive 3rd tax cut can be 'cut' as an expensive 'program' in order to reduce deficits?

11. Only ten people showed up for his Town Hall Mtg?
More people would benefit from this worthy idea, especially in WV.

snip>
About 406,000 West Virginians receive Social Security benefits. As many as 64 percent receive these as retirement benefits, while others are survivors of benefactors or the disabled, according to Rockefeller.

As for the tax cuts, those most likely to benefit are those earning at least $300,000 annually, he said.

Only about 6,000 West Virginians receiving Social Security would qualify.

17. Town Hall Meeting?
Maybe Rockefeller expected his constituents in these here parts to be psychic? Like: If a "Town Hall Meeting" hadn't been mentioned in this news article, we still wouldn't know about it.
Nevertheless, Jay's idea is a good one--the best one I've seen thus far.

13. Perfect. The American people will support this plan.
When it comes to tax cuts for the rich or fixing SS, the American people will always pick the latter.

14. I heard Jay on the radio Friday. I believe GWB sort of said
this in his 2000 campaign. At that time I believe GWB said he would take 1/3 of the Clinton surplus and use it to fund SS. That was his response to Al Gore's (Lock Box), of course he forgot about that 1/3 and gave it away along with the other 2/3 to his pals too.

15. "Here's my solution for Social Security..I'm a Rockefeller, I should know.
What an ad campaign. Jay coming on like this and just slamming * with this simple solution. It would make points on multiple levels but really hit the boomer generation and up since "Rockefeller" is associated with Rich. Here's Mr. Richy Rich telling Mr. Nouveau Riche (Bush) that the wealthy can pay for this and not lost much sleep.

Think about it.
