Neo-Nazis March as Dresden Remembers War Dead

DRESDEN, Germany (Reuters) - Waving black flags and carrying banners, thousands of neo-Nazis marched in Dresden on Sunday, marring the official 60th anniversary commemoration of one of the fiercest Allied bombing raids of World War II.

Police said around 5,000 people joined the march in the eastern German city, making it one of the biggest far-right demonstrations since the war. Around 50 people, including anti-fascist protesters, were arrested after minor clashes.

Once on the fringe, far-right parties have seized on Germany's recognition finally of its own wartime suffering to grab headlines and forge political gains, especially in the east where unemployment remains high 15 years after unification.

The far right is hoping to repeat its electoral successes next week in the western state of Schleswig Holstein and in May in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous region.

2. SAME GAME over here...
White supremacists trying to get message to mainstream audience
Posted on Sunday, February 13 @ 09:13:45 EST By Stephanie Simon, San Francisco Chronicle

St. Louis -- White-supremacist groups around the country are moving aggressively to recruit new members by promoting their violent, racist ideologies on billboards, in radio commercials and in leaflets tossed on suburban driveways.

Watching with mounting alarm, civil rights monitors say these tactics stake out a much bolder, more public role for many hate groups, which are trying to shed their image as shadowy extremists and claim more mainstream support.

3. This is sad.
It reminds me of a psychological disturbed person trying to get different results from doing the same old thing. Like I said, sad!

13. Absolutely. Just after the coup of 2000 there was SUCH
garbage on the Rainbow Coalition website - horrible, gloating, "Aryan Supremacist" b.s.

Bush is THEIR GUY. They think he embodies their dreams.

Frankly I'm scared.

8. Dresden Bombing

Winston Churchill said of the bombing:

"It seems to me that the moment has come when the question of bombing German cities simply for the sake of increasing the terror, should be reviewed."

10. Udo Voigt said, "Only a great statesman can commit great crimes."
He was refering to Adolf Hitler.

The remembrance for the victims of the Dresden firebombing should not be allowed to become an occasion for a Nazi revival. Most observers understand that by today's standards the bombing of Dresden would be considered a war crime. Furthermore, there's a general openness to exploring questions of whether it was ethical, moral or legal at the time it was carried out. If NPD historical revisionism were limited to taking a stand against the Allied powers on that issue, it would hardly be controversal, much less repugnant. But that's not what the NPD rally is about. It's about presenting a moral equivalency between the bombing of Dresden and Nazi war crimes and crimes against humanity in order to excuse the latter and advance the cause of militant German nationalism.

11. Neo-Nazis upstage Dresden memorial (The Guardian)
5,000 people take part in a funeral march to the music of Wagner to mourn civilians killed by the allied bombing raids

Luke Harding in Dresden
Monday February 14, 2005
The Guardian

Waving black flags and banners, thousands of neo-Nazis marched through the heart of Dresden yesterday on the 60th anniversary of the city's destruction by British and American bombers.

In the largest neo-Nazi demonstration in Germany's postwar history, about 5,000 people took part in a "funeral march" to mourn the civilians killed by the allied attack

The protest upstaged the official commemoration of the anniversary, during which the British ambassador laid a wreath at a cemetery where victims were buried. Meanwhile, thousands of local citizens gathered in the old square for a candlelight vigil.

Large numbers of riot police were drafted into Dresden as several hundred anti-fascists hurled abuse at the far-right marchers and shouted: "Nazis out!"

14. using the deaths of those poor people to advance their agenda ...
Sounds awfully familiar! Personally I don't see how some Holocaust-deniers can argue that Dresden proves that the death camps didn't happen, but perhaps I'm more cynical about human nature, particularly in wartime.
