BANJA LUKA, Bosnia (Reuters) - A Bosnian Serb court acquitted on Friday 11 Serb policemen linked to the murders of a Catholic priest and his parents in the first such war crimes ruling since the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s.
The unique decision by the court in the Bosnian Serb part of the country contrasts sharply with the high rate of war crimes investigations in the Muslim-Croat half of Bosnia, where dozens of trials have taken place.
A leading human rights campaigner, reacting to the acquittals, said there were clear signs that inadequate investigations into the murders may have jeopardized the judgment.
Banja Luka district court president Dusko Bojovic said there was no evidence to prove the policemen had illegally detained and kept under house arrest priest Tomislav Matanovic and his parents for a month before their disappearance.
