AP: U.S. Soldier Killed in Iraq Fighting (#1461)
http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/93-02132005-449631.html

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A U.S. soldier was killed in fighting north of Baghdad and gunmen assassinated an Iraqi general and two companions in a Shiite neighborhood of the capital Sunday. Election officials said a Shiite alliance won the most votes in the Jan. 30 elections but will have to form a coalition government.

Three other U.S. soldiers were killed when their vehicle rolled into a canal Sunday, the military said. The men from Task Force Danger were on a combat patrol near the town of Balad, 50 miles north of Baghdad, the U.S. command said in a statement.

A fourth Task Force Danger soldier was killed and one was wounded in fighting near Samarra, a flashpoint of the insurgency 60 miles north of Baghdad, the military said.

4. Violence?
I thought the election was supposed to stop the violence. All I remember were the purple fingers and people dancing. It's such a peaceful country!

5. 3 other U.S. soldiers were killed.
The headline doesn't reflect this:

Three other U.S. soldiers were killed when their vehicle rolled into a canal Sunday, the military said. The men from Task Force Danger were on a combat patrol near the town of Balad, 50 miles north of Baghdad, the U.S. command said in a statement.

6. Charlie Rangel was great on TV.
He stated it was wonderful that Iraqis could vote but if the American people had been asked if holding Iraqi elections was worth the invasion and occupation, they would have said no.

7. For what it's worth we are approaching another milestone (1500)
Will ABC Nightline pause to recap the 1500 dead as they did when 1000 died? I doubt it since they took so much flack over that as being too political (you recall, it was in Sept, I think, before the election)

The media may not reflect again until we reach 2,000.

8. More blood on Bush's hands

More young lives that will not be lived because of this atrocity of a president.

9. Most of them voted for *
The ones that lived to November 2004 voted for him twice.

It is the delusion of the military mindset (and probably self-delusion is necessary in order not to go insane) that all the soldiers are dying for the worthy cause of the purple finger.

You don't want to try to convince any of them their comrades are dying in vain. You risk them "going postal" or maybe I should say "going Abu Ghraib" on you.

10. We went thru this in Nam
Few wanted to acknowledge the war was insane and without merit. They wanted the kids to die for some honorable reason. Today, Americans are trying to justify their insane vote for Bush at a cost of death to our kids.
