Keyes' daughter says she's 'liberal queer'

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The daughter of conservative Republican Alan Keyes referred to herself Monday as a “liberal queer” and urged support for gay and lesbian young people who have been deserted by their families.

Maya Marcel-Keyes, 19, addressed a rally sponsored by the gay-rights group Equality Maryland, saying she was motivated to speak out because of her rocky relationship with her parents and the recent death of a friend who had fallen ill after being thrown out of the house by his family.

Marcel-Keyes told several hundred supporters that her sexuality had created a rift in her relationship with her parents.

“Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn’t mesh well,” she said. “That was making my life a little bit turbulent.”

2. I'm assuming
That calling herself queer is a disarmament technique, as well as a blow to her parents. Kinda how I joke about being short, "Look man, I will BITE your kneecaps."

"queer eye for the straight guy"
the term "queer" no longer has a negative connotation as it once did. a lot of gays seem to use the term for themselves in a way to show it's nothing to be ashamed of.

i think "fag" and even "homo" is probably seen more in a negative way.

Nothing snarky intended, I just thought that this "disarming" technique was pretty well known at this point.

4. Maya confuses me.
She has as much right to her own opinions as anyone else, but her relationship with her parents wasn't rocky enough to stop her from campaigning with her dad in IL this fall. Oh, yeah, and she thinks abortion is genocide of African-Americans. :wtf:

7. Seems like she was still trying to win her dad's love
in part by campaigning for him. As for her views on abortion they likely came from listening to dear old dad. Suffice to say she'll never have to make that choice for herself.

I was ready to call her a whore - campaigning for her father, when he has so little regard for her. I never thought of it from the trying to win Daddy's love perspective. In which case, I ache for her and Keyes is the whore for taking her support when he disagrees with her lifestyle.

But still, any homosexual who works for an anti-gay candidate, something wrong there....

I'll cut her some slack, especially considering the household she is coming from.

It took many years of being away from my parents before I finally felt like I was a real, healthy person. Even when I was able to think for myself, I was often too afraid to express my true opinions. I probably would have lied to anyone in order to win my father's approval. That is what a strict conservative religious upbringing can do to a person.

14. well, she is only 19
so in the legal sense it has just been about 1 year since she could actually act upon any choices she might make which involved being away from the parents.

and i think it's pretty nice that even during the campaign she would tell the truth about her situation on her website.

i think her being kicked out of the home probably had more to do with her wanting to be open and wanting to speak out against the hate rather than just being lesbian in itself.

I was quite impressed with her equanimity, poise, and bright outlook. She's got a lot of living to do before her opinions are well-informed, and I can only be optimistic about her prospects.

I detest damned near every position Alan Keyes has taken ... but he and his wife raised a bright, charming daughter. She's possibly his best accomplishment. He's an ass for not knowing that.

I can't imagine taking on something like this at 19.

What was so hilarious is that during the interview on CNN, Leslie looked livid, it was like he was in shock and it wasn't from that interview. This was right at the same time the Gannons porn pics were hitting the internet, and I think he was almost catatonic. You could just see the bewilderment in his eyes.

I look at my daughter and I see present growth and future perfection. I don't care how she loves, I just hope she finds someone worthy of such love.

The Alan Keyes of this world confuse the hell out of me. You can't truly love someone if you aren't capable of accepting who they are. May Marcel live the life she wants and may she find a way to separate her identity from her father's politics in a way that makes her feel complete peace within herself.

Edited on Tue Feb-15-05 04:06 AM by Disturbed
My wife and I have two daughters and two sons. They are all over 21 now. One of my daughters told us that she was a Bi when she was 16. It was a shock to us. We went to a counselor with her to talk about the situation. Not to change her but to allow all of us to adjust to the news. The other children just seemed to accept the news rather quickly with no counseling required. We adjusted and so did the entire family and are real proud of her as we are of all of our children. Several years later she felt that she was lesbian. We were all fine with that. I don't know how quick of an adjustment I would have made if one or both of my sons announced that they were gay but hopefully that would have been similar as with my daughter. I am so glad that I turned out to be a leftie, coming from a Conservative Mom and Dad. that's another story for another time. ;0)

27. Daughter of conservative Republican calls herself 'liberal queer'
Tuesday, February 15, 2005 Posted: 8:17 AM EST (1317 GMT)

Maya Marcel-Keyes, daughter of conservative political commentator Alan Keyes, speaks Monday during a gay rights rally.

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland (AP) -- The daughter of conservative Republican Alan Keyes referred to herself Monday as a "liberal queer" and urged support for gay and lesbian young people who have been deserted by their families.

The Point Foundation, established to assist young adults attending university whose financial support disappears after they come out. This is a cause we should all support:

I really don't think being gay has anything to do with being a Liberal. Do us a favor and keep it to yourself. But if she wants to use it to rip Daddy, I'll join her.

Daddy ran the worst campaign you ever saw. Actually said, God endorsed him. I wrote and asked him to bring God down and have him back this up. Surprise, he never answered.

Barak Obama had the best line I wish Kerry would have used. In the debate Keyes was just God this and God that. Obama just looked at him and said, Man, I'm not running to be Minister of Illinois.

Gong. Fight Over.

43. I thought she self-described as an ANARCHIST QUEER
A liberal queer is one that believes in liberal democratic capitalism...as practiced in the U.S.

An ANARCHIST QUEER is someone who believes in gay rights...but also believes there should be no State...ala the Spanish Anarchists.

So...which is it?

Is she flinging the Anarchist (libertarian socialism) label around because it's a fad and cool to say...or is she really anarchist?

49. Alan Keyes' Daughter Coming Out
Edited on Mon Feb-14-05 12:48 AM by RamboLiberal
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/02/13/politics/main673732.shtml

The 19-year-old daughter of Alan Keyes has a queer Valentine for the anti-gay rights conservative pundit and frequent Republican candidate.

Maya Marcel-Keyes will be making her first public appearance as a gay activist at a Valentine Day's rally in front of the Maryland State House, says Dan Furmansky, the leader of Equality Maryland, a gay rights group.

Last summer her father, a conservative pundit and frequent Republican candidate, caused a stir during the Republican convention by labeling Vice President Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter a sinner and calling homosexuality "selfish hedonism."

"It was kind of strange that he said it like a hypothetical," she told the Washington Post. "It was really kind of unpleasant."

Marcel-Keyes told the Post her parents have thrown her out of the house, stopped speaking to her and refuse to pay for college because she is gay. She said she loves her parents.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The daughter of conservative Republican Alan Keyes referred to herself Monday as a "liberal queer" and urged support for gay and lesbian young people who have been deserted by their families.

"Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well," she said. "That was making my life a little bit turbulent."

Later, Marcel-Keyes told CNN her parents "were not too pleased" when they learned she was a lesbian, but she said she loves them "very much, and they love me. They can't support my activities."

Her father, the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Illinois last year, created a stir in August when he said during an interview that homosexuality was "selfish hedonism" and that Vice President Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter was a sinner.

At 19, to be rejected by your RW fundie family, and to go public as an activist for gay rights... wow. I admire her.

Alan Keyes' daughter comes out as a lesbian
By Kevin Wayne
February 14, 2005

snip

Months after the election, the 19-year-old Maya came out Monday during an Equality Maryland rally in Annapolis, Md.

Maya told the Washington Post Monday her parents, Keyes and his wife, Jocelyn, threw her out of the family’s Chicago apartment, will not pay her college tuition and stopped speaking to her.

According to the Washington Post, despite the fact that Maya has been kicked out of her home, a San Francisco-based charity, the Point Foundation, has stepped in to provide the money needed for Maya to begin her studies at Brown University this fall.

Oh, the irony
I really feel for her. Not only because her father is an ignoramus, but also because of the cruelty. I mean how would you feel if you were 19 (maybe 18 at the time) and your father had publicly stated that your sexual orientation made you a selfish hedonist? your own father?!

I truly admire her integrity and courage. This must be such a difficult time in her young life. I hope she has a strong support network. It's such a sad, poignant study in how ignorance and intolerance can sever one of the strongest bonds ever known to man: the father/daughter relationship. Shame on Alan Keyes.

Is this why he threw her out?
Because he knew she would be making a public appearance? It wouldn't surprise me. Very Republican--they express disapproval of a lot things, but the worst sin of all is to be publicly exposed doing something they claim is wrong.

shame on Alan Keyes! She loves you...you dirty bastard!
Your daughter loves you...that hasn't changed...and you can't accept it for who she is.

Don't make the mistake of disowning your daughter...reconcile...if you don't do it know, in the future, the hate and pain of having been disowned might be too much for her.

You already screwed up with throwing her out...apologize to her and welcome her back into your life!

If you've taught her REAL Christian principles...she'll forgive you for your temporary lapse into hate...and still love you.

An Anarchist TOO!

Oh boy...talk about a bombshell for daddy!

Good for her...if she's anarchist, she's questioning capitalism, and questioning the linkages between it and homophobic behavior. Speaks volumes about her desire to be a critical thinker...and her courage against facing homophobia AND the prevailing capitalist beliefs.

This is a smart girl...I got to hand it to the father, who is also a VERY SMART man and has great oratorical skills (if absolutely no heart and a religious narrow-mindedness). Like father, like daughter...at least on intelligence. (credit where credit is due...her dad's smart)

But...wow...a QUEER ANARCHIST...talk about a shocker for daddy.

From Gay.com:
Alan Keyes' daughter says she is a lesbian
by Eric Johnston
PlanetOut Network

snip...

"As long as I was quiet about being gay or my politics, we got along," she told the Post. "Then I went to the Counterinaugural," last month's protests in Washington against President Bush. "My father didn't like that."

Candace Gingrich, the youth outreach manager for the Human Rights Campaign, told the PlanetOut Network that Marcel-Keyes' coming out "shows courage."

Candace Gingrich has a few things in common with Marcel-Keyes. The lesbian activist is the half-sister of former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a Republican with an anti-gay voting record.

"Maya's experience is not unlike what so many young queer people face," said Candace Gingrich. "That decision to come out is still sometimes fraught with things like being kicked out of your home. I've talked with people this has happened to, heard their stories. For every Maya ... there are hundreds of queer kids who find themselves in the same situation."

And Cheneys daughter Mary played right along with the scam and became complicit with her silence. She is just as phony as her parents. Perhaps more so?

Which is why, had it any sense, the Democratic Party...
...would mention Cheney's daughter--positively, of course--in connection with every single instance of public policy concerning sexual preference. E.g., "This legislation will benefit members of society like Vice President Cheney's daughter, Mary, ensuring they are entitled to decent and fair treatment under the law."

What a great way to expose the hypocrisy at the heart of the right wing Puritan project, while using a kind of political judo to advance our cause.

But no. That type of cleverness is too risky for these jellyfish.

61. Keyes' daughter is far more braver than Mary Cheney though
Keyes' daughter isn't just standing by her dad through all the hate as Mary Cheney does. she is actually speaking out against it. and i'm thinking that may be where the actual conflict which led to her being kicked out of the home is. if she had kept quiet and just went about in private and not criticized her dad and other anti gay people then he might not have kicked her out. she spoke out even during the campaign.

but she is brave. especially as a young black lesbian female. i do wonder what the relationship between her and her brothers and mothers is like. hopefully she is close to her brothers and keep in contact. i'm sure she will get a lot of support from people around the country but she will also be targeted by the haters like her dad.

Edited on Mon Feb-14-05 01:29 AM by JI7
even though he isn't for it himself.

but the fact is that even Bush isn't really for it. it was always a political strategy to exploit the homophobia in this country to their advantage.

since the election Bush said he wont push for the amendment and he even supports civil unions.

and i'm sure this is why Cheney and even Mary Cheney had no problem supporting them. the difference with Maya Keyes is she speaks out against the hate also .

the same probably goes for roe v wade. he never said he opposed roe v wade or he would work to overturn it.

And Christ said you would know his followers by their acts. How can these people be able to delude themselves into believing that they live according to the Bible ? I can respect true christians, though I don't agree with them. Yet these people put shame to the entire faith.

62. Thank you for mentioning this.
All these "values" people don't really try to act like Christ at all. What they mean in all their pious, sanctimoneous
pronouncements is Think like us, and judge harshly those who are "different"; they're not spreading the spirit of God's LOVE, they thrive on spreading God's supposed judgement of our sinfulness (well, except their own).
Disowning your child because of the way she was born and the way she will always be is more sinful than anything having to do with her sexual orientation. Does he really think she's ALL BAD and full of sin because of what she does in the privacy of her bedroom? He can't see past that to the person she is?
Mr. Keyes is in need of a spiritual intervention to remind him of Christ's teachings.

82. Alan Keyes' Daughter Coming Out
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/02/13/politics/main673732.shtml

Not sure if this is appropriate for Breaking News or not, but I did not see this posted anywhere. I guess a "silver lining" for the wing-nuts is that at least Keyes is not being a hypocrite. Nice to see how supportive and understanding he is though. What a piece of work this guy is. In any event, I guess all that lecturing and "churching" just didn't stick with his daughter. Does this mean his "family values" suck, or is it possible that his daughter just was born this way? I'd love to hear some "fundies" take on this. Will they say; "what a failure he is as a father", or will they say that "he obviously lost out to the 'gay agenda'?"

From the story:

Maya Marcel-Keyes will be making her first public appearance as a gay activist at a Valentine Day's rally in front of the Maryland State House, says Dan Furmansky, the leader of Equality Maryland, a gay rights group.

Last summer her father, a conservative pundit and frequent Republican candidate, caused a stir during the Republican convention by labeling Vice President Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter a sinner and calling homosexuality "selfish hedonism."

Marcel-Keyes told the Post her parents have thrown her out of the house, stopped speaking to her and refuse to pay for college because she is gay. She said she loves her parents.

86. Maya Keyes speaks at gay rights rally
The Advocate, CA - 1 hour ago

Maya Keyes speaks at gay rights rally

Maya Keyes, the lesbian daughter of conservative Republican Alan Keyes, who is currently featured in an exclusive interview on Advocate.com, appealed to several hundred people at a rally in Annapolis, Md., on Monday to provide more support for gay and lesbian young people who have been deserted by their families and too often wind up being victims of violence on the streets. In her first public appearance since her sexual orientation began to attract public attention, Maya Marcel-Keyes said she was motivated to speak out because of the illness and recent death of a high school friend who was thrown out of the house by his family and by her own relationship with her parents.

At home, "things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well," she said at the rally, sponsored by Equality Maryland to protest a proposed state constitutional ban on gay marriage and support bills aimed at guaranteeing more rights for gays. "That was making my life a little bit turbulent," she said.

After her speech, responding to questions from an interviewer for CNN, Marcel-Keyes said her parents "were not too pleased" when they learned she was a lesbian, but she said she loves them "very much, and they love me. They can't support my activities." Her father, the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Illinois last year, created a stir in August when he said during an interview in August that homosexuality is "selfish hedonism" and that Vice President Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter is a sinner.

During her speech, Marcel-Keyes contrasted the outpouring of support she received when her sexual orientation became known with that of her friend. "Like me, he grew up queer in a conservative household," she said. But where she got hundreds of e-mails, offers of a place to stay and a college scholarship, "he'd been out there two years and had gotten nothing. And the worst part is, he isn't the only one," Marcel-Keyes said. "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to, there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care."'

she acted really silly. She didn't make herself look very good but I'm glad she "came out"

99. who give a sh*t?
Why does anybody pay attention to people who's only political position in life is focused on their genitals??? I just don't get it. It seems so irrelevant in comparison to life and death in Iraq, a stolen presidency, a thousand evils that have come to America since 1/2000.

Remember that episode of Michael Moore's show "The Awful Truth" where he asked Alan Keyes to jump in the mosh pit? Maya was right by her Dad's side urging him to jump in. Maya rocks.
