'Gannon' Signs Off: Guckert Says He'll No Longer Talk to Press
Edited on Tue Feb-15-05 11:33 AM by tuvor
NEW YORK James D. Guckert, the former White House reporter who's been accused of everything from asking partisan questions to being a male prostitute, is no longer speaking to the press, claiming it does not help his cause, he told E&P this morning.

"I talked to attorneys, and I am no longer talking to anyone anymore," said Guckert, who has used the alias Jeff Gannon. "It doesn’t seem to clarify anything any longer. Everything I say, people start a new conspiracy theory. I am not going to answer any more questions. It seems to distract from what is really going on."

That approach is a shift from Guckert's activities in the past week, when he has appeared on CNN and National Public Radio and allowed several other news organizations, including E&P, to interview him.

Guckert, who says he is 47, said he was not planning any specific legal action related to recent events but had contacted an attorney just in case. "It's always good to have an attorney hanging around," he told E&P. "I'm not expecting anything, I am just listening to good advice."

Court: Reporters Must Testify in CIA Leak Case

2 hours, 34 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court ruled on Tuesday that two journalists must testify before a federal grand jury about their confidential sources in an investigation into a leak that exposed the identity of a covert CIA (news - web sites) operative.

The three-judge panel ruled that New York Times reporter Judith Miller and Matthew Cooper of Time Magazine must comply with a subpoena from a grand jury investigating whether the Bush administration illegally leaked the officer's name to the news media.

The decision upheld a ruling by a federal judge that Miller and Cooper were in contempt of court and should be jailed for refusing to testify about their confidential sources. Miller and Cooper each face as much as 18 months in prison.

13. Good parts -
"In addition, evidence emerged on the site Americablog yesterday suggesting that Guckert not only set up but sex sites but also offered his services as male prostitute. When asked by E&P today about such accusations, Gannon declined to confirm or deny. "I am not going to talk about that," he said.

He also would not comment on McClellan's statements to E&P in an interview yesterday, in which the White House spokesman claimed he did not know that Guckert used an alias until recently, never talked to Guckert outside the briefing room, and knew very little about Talon News."

15. "Always good to have an attorney around" yup, esp when the court just
said that the news media will have to give up the sources of the Plame leak!!

Besides, Daddy KKKarl probably told you to shut your big mouth. In just the past week:

  1. You said to look into your past, nothing to hide - We did, you did!
  2. You told DU you wanted to make #1 idiot - Congrats, you did!
  3. You posted on your site that you were going to be silent, then you go on interviews and LIE - and we found out about it!

Seems like there may be at least a few in the Administration who would love to see you shut up...

(by the way, hope your attorney tells you that immunity from prosecution is a guarantee, while the promise of a pardon from an administration that might not be in power later is not)

24. Clarify THIS, Jeff!
Edited on Tue Feb-15-05 12:12 PM by rocknation
From Americablog.com:

JEFF GANNON: Well, several years ago, before I came to Washington, I had registered various domain names for a private client. I was doing Web site development. Those sites were never hosted. There's -- nothing ever went up on them. And the client went on to do something else. - CNN, 2/10/05

...In 1999, Paul Leddy, a Web designer and photographer, says he received an email from a man named Jeff from Wilmington, Delaware. Jeff wanted Paul to build him a new Web site for his business. Paul accepted the job, provided Jeff mailed him a check with half the money up front (Jeff had not provided a last name, and Paul wanted to make sure he was for real). Jeff sent the check, it cleared, and Paul built the site and launched it online for Jeff.

Paul didn’t think about Jeff much until last week when he heard about a breaking scandal involving a man named Jeff who owned several military escort service Web addresses. “I saw the name Jeff Gannon, knew our Jeff, saw the militarystud.com Web address, and thought ‘hmmm, everything was military, that sounds like Jeff who we did the site for.’”

He brings a whole new dimension to the meaning of the term "Liar, liar, pants on fire," doesn't he?

36. A microcosm for His Chimperial Majesty, perhaps?
I think the two have a lot in common -- like rigidly compartmentalized brains, hyper-"manliness" and love of "tough guy" stuff", extreme riskiness, utter arrogance, feeling fooled into thinking you can do anything because the law hasn't caught up with you yet, utter inability to comprehend one's own hypocrisy, and constant deception.

How this guy thought he was going to get away with living a double life, and always hide the sleaze he was involved in -- it really is amazing.

Funny -- "conspiracy theory" is what his pal Scotty always says when confronted with an unpleasant reality.

He's a smirky loyalist to the end -- having been exposed for what he was and having given up his job, he says he's not worried, because there are lots of opportunities out there. Sure, JD, in the shadowy half-criminal world you extremists have fostered in our nation.

As for what he charged the administration, who knows? We know that cretin Eberle paid "half" his salary, so the question remains: who paid the OTHER half?

http://mediamatters.org/items/200502100001

In addition to citing both Talon News and Gannon on ABC Radio Networks' The Sean Hannity Show, Hannity has referred to Gannon as "a terrific Washington bureau chief and White House correspondent for Talon News," and according to a program summary on the website for San Francisco radio station KSFO, which carries Hannity's show, Gannon was a guest on the February 10, 2004, edition of the program. The program summary for that broadcast states: "Sean spends a moment with Jeff Gannon, Washington Bureau Chief for Talon News.com. Jeff talks about his daily meetings with White House Press Secretary Scott McCellan ."

46. This guy wants to talk - someone else is telling him to STFU
This guy is a dumbass and is a blackmark on us happy liberal folks here in Wilmington DE (technically he lives in Greenville).

I can almost guarentee someone high up has told him to STFU because "Gannon" is an arrogant bastard who truly believes he has no skeletons hiding in his closets. I have a feeling that some sort of fundie christianity is involved and for some bizarre reason "Gannon" thinks he's been born-again and therefore forgiven of all past sins.

Anyhow....

I would almost guess that someone connected to the Bush White House has told this person to stop doing interview because everytime Gannon is interviewed, he shows such fricking argogance that it just wants to make folks find out more about who he is and what else is lurking in his closet. Gannon will never in a million years admit to his past even those its as clear as purified spring water!

51. Which fat cat is funding the attorney for this out-of-work impostor?
The term "conspiracy theory" is not only over-used, to the point of triteness, by the radical right, it's being mis-used as well.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspiracy_theory,

Colloquially, a conspiracy theory is any unconventional theory about current or historical events, with the connotation that that theory is unfounded, outlandish, or irrational or in some way unworthy of serious consideration.

This "unconventional" story about "Gannon" is surrounded by hard facts that, "outlandish" and "irrational" as they may be, they are not "unfounded", and they most certainly are worthy of "serious consideration".

In fact, there needs to be a congressional investigation of "Gannon". He's going to need that lawyer.

52. That's ok, Jimmy. You're just a link in the chain....
We want the links that are further up the chain than you to start singing now.

Don't think that you are more important than you are. No one really cares whether or not you talk now. We know enough about you that your input is no longer required. The answers we await now are from the powers that be in the White House.

You're just a bit player in this huge tragedy. We are waiting on the protagonist to talk.
