The covenant marriage, a legally-binding nuptial agreement introduced by conservatives in America, has received an impressive boost after a US state governor and his wife publicly "upgraded" their vows.
In front of a cheering crowd of more than 6,000 people in a sports arena in North Little Rock, Arkansas, on Monday night, Mike Huckabee, the state's governor, became the most high-profile convert to the covenant cause.
The contract, only available in three states, the others being Arizona and Louisiana, commits a couple to seek counselling before they get married and before any separation.
Divorce is only permissible on a handful of legal grounds, including adultery, sexual or physical abuse, and one of the spouses being imprisoned.
