Officials: Militants Targeted Eiffel Tower
PARIS (AP) -- Islamic militants under investigation for allegedly
planning an attack on the Russian Embassy in Paris had other targets
on their list, including the Eiffel Tower, police and judicial
officials said Wednesday.

Three men, all Algerians, were detained Jan. 11 in connection with an
investigation into a network of Islamic radicals supporting Chechen
rebels, the officials said on condition of anonymity.

More than 20 people have been jailed in a series of arrests since
December 2002 as part of an investigation into the network. The
investigation revealed an alleged plot against the Russian Embassy and
a planned chemical attack.

On Wednesday, judicial officials confirmed the three arrests, which
were first reported by the daily Le Parisien. The newspaper said
attacks in Britain were also allegedly planned and that those arrested
in France had links to a group of Islamic radicals in Spain.

2. Not what I needed to hear...
I am taking a trip to France for the first time in my life in three weeks and going to the top of the Eiffel tower was the first thing on my list. Oh well, maybe I'll just enjoy it from the ground!
Main reason I chose France is because I figured I wouldn't run into any thugs there...they are all hysterically anti France/French these days, so it should be very enjoyable, LOL.

5. tinfoilinfor2005, Bienvenu en France
It's also a country where they catch terrorists before the commit their acts.

And they haven't had to "Newspeak" the dictionary for such old fashioned words as "truth" or "democracy".

Their biggest fault is that they expect foreigners to speak French, which seriously hampers exchanges. Still, you're coming to 80% anti-Bush country.

So, enjoy the wine and cheese and tell the people back home that we're not evil just because we value human life more than oil.

7. Merci for the advice!
I am making an effort on the language. Spent six months with Pimsleur's French lessons 1-8. I figure if they see that I'm trying, they might meet me half way. I run a resort in the Florida Keys and I get annoyed when someone arrives from a foreign country and hasn't made the slightest attempt to speak a word of English. And I have learned to say that I am an American but NO BUSH. :)

3. So the "cheese eating surrender monkeys" managed to ...
stop several terrorist attacks in Paris, including one on their most beloved cultural icon, AND they made three arrests - yet they never fired one shot or dropped a single bomb. That makes our leadership look barbaric, incompetent and just plain stupid, don't you think?

I guess we'll be eating "freedom fries" again! :eyes:

4. I got a bloody nose on the top of the Eiffel Tower.
Bled right over the edge. This was when I was a kid, and a butterfly flapping it's wings would give me a nose bleed. But hey, who else can claim that.

6. Oh, militants....
I thought it meant the people who put that hideous light installation on it. Gak! Talk about attacking an icon....
