Pressure on the US Government was stepped up by human rights groups yesterday as American military officials acknowledged that two prisoners captured in Afghanistan in December had been killed while under interrogation at Bagram air base north of Kabul.

The revelation revived concerns that the US is resorting to torture in its treatment of Taliban fighters and suspected al-Qa'ida operatives.

A spokesman for the air base confirmed that the official cause of death of the two men was "homicide", contradicting earlier accounts that one had died of a heart attack and the other from a pulmonary embolism.

The two men, both Afghans, died last December at the US forces base in Bagram, north of Kabul, where prisoners have been held for questioning.

There is no reason on earth that we would need to kill a prisoner in interrogation. This is just the total failure that Bush represents to the world.

Torture and killing of prisoners was one of the things that we were supposed to stop Hussein for. And now, what do we do? Why the backlash is not upon the White House already is starting to wear on me. How pliable are the minds of my fellow Americans? What about their resolve to change this trend?
