The Prime Minister made a series of appearances on the television channel Five, trying to reach out to vital swing voters that Labour strategists believe ignore more conventional forms of political communication.
Labour campaign chiefs say they are willing, and even keen, to repeat incidents like that during the 2001 campaign when Sharon Storer, the partner of a cancer patient, harangued Mr Blair outside a hospital. But such a repetition came earlier than even the most masochistic of Labour advisers could have expected.
Appearing on Five’s The Wright Stuff audience-based chat show yesterday morning, Mr Blair was faced with Maria Hutchings. Advancing on the Prime Minister as he spoke about health care, she declared: "Tony, that’s rubbish."
