Paramaribo, Feb 17 (Prensa Latina) Both the outgoing and incoming chairmen of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have called for the return of Haiti to CARICOM and to the democratic way of power.
The outgoing CARICOM chairman, Grenada´s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, expressed disappointment for the failure to bring Haiti back on the road to democracy at the 16th Inter-sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Eastern Caribbean, closing Thursday in Paramaribo, Surinam.
"Fellow Heads of Government, it is in the context of regional unity that I refer to the situation with our brothers and sisters in Haiti. I believe the only way forward is for the Community to revisit our official position on Haiti," he noted in his opening address Wednesday.
"We have a moral, regional and indeed "family" obligation to engage Haiti, rather than remain on the sidelines, as has been the case," he said.
