Democrats say new calculator shows losses under Bush's Social Security plan

CAPITOL HILL Democrats on Capitol Hill are adding to their arsenal of objections to President Bush's plan for Social Security to include private retirement accounts.

New York Senator Charles Schumer has unveiled a Social Security calculator -- one that he says will show "just how bad the Bush privatization plan is, especially for young people."

Schumer says the calculator will be available on Democratic Web sites. He says users only need to put in the year they were born and the average income that they expect over their lifetime.

He says the calculator will show that most people, especially younger workers, would lose money under President Bush's privatization plan.

1. I lost 30%...
I put 35,500 and born in 1979 as my values...

and after comparing, Bush's plan would cut 30% off my yearly social security benefit.

Great plan *, great plan. :grr:

6. I lost 30% too. I put my mom in (who earns five times as much as
me-but just enough to be comfortable) and she only lost 10%. :wtf: :grr: So this is a prime example of steal from the poor to give to the rich.

13. age, rather than wealth
The percentage losses grow, I believe, the younger you are. I put in 2 different salaries for my year, (1955), and got the same percentage. Put in my nephew's year, and it's a much larger loss.

8. It would be very nice if this story made the NYT and WaPo. Hint, hint
You MSM guys out there reading this: Can't you run something that doesn't make SS "reform" seem proper and inevitable, as if only ignorant, impertinent peons dare to question the WH and its subservient punditocracy (with a few admirable and notable exceptions)? And just for the hell of it, can you give it equal play on page one or up front in broadcasts with the WH ad campaign stuff?

Or do you care if we think you're cowardly, careerist hacks whose lifework is better suited to line bird cages and litter boxes than to enlighten us and earn our respect? Most of you don't earn much more than most of us. Why sell us out?

Think about it, at least.

and my wife's was down 17%. It comes to almost $700/mo. total.

If * somehow (can't imagine Amurkins are that stupid but I've been wrong before.) gets his way, I'll have to learn to say, "Paper or plastic?" or "Do you want fries with that?"

16. This is getting some good ink
Reuters puts it in a piece that begins with bush admitting failure:

snip>
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush acknowledged on Thursday that after nearly a month of lobbying he had failed to sway Congress on his plan to overhaul Social Security but he vowed to keep up the effort.
...
The president told a news conference that he would be doing a lot of travel in coming weeks to try to make his case.

Democrats plan travel of their own to counter Bush. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and other Democrats plan to hold events in a number of cities in early March.

Senate Democrats also launched a new Internet calculator on Thursday that would allow workers to calculate their retirement benefits under Bush's plan. Sen. Charles Schumer of New York said the calculator, which many Democrats will feature on their Web sites, would show that younger workers face the deepest cuts compared to what is promised under the current Social Security system......more.....

http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=politicsNews&storyID=7666342&src=rss/ElectionCoverage

Sorta gives some weight to the concept of the calculator, don't you think?
