Zarqawi Could Be in Iraq's Kirkuk - Police Source

KIRKUK, Iraq (Reuters) - Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi may be hiding out in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, local police sources said on Saturday, days after the interim government said it was hot on his trail.

"He came to Kirkuk from Mosul," a source in the Kirkuk police department said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "There's a possibility that he might be captured at any moment."

Iraq's interior minister said this month that Iraqi security forces were tracking Zarqawi and had recently come close to capturing him, missing him by only a few hours.

"We are following him," Interior Minister Falah al-Naqib told Pentagon reporters from Baghdad. "I think we missed him twice or three times, but hopefully next time we will be able to capture him."

4. Zarqawi in Kirkuk?

I'd be surprised if this is the case, inasmuch as Kirkuk is claimed by the Kurds. It's interesting though, given that this is coming from the Iraqi government -- it makes me wonder if this will be used as a pretense to attempt to increase the Iraqi government's influence/presence in Kirkuk. If this is the case, it'd definitely be an issue for the Kurds, as many Kurdish nationalists see Kirkuk as the capital of a potential Kurdish state. Kirkuk's going to be an important touchpoint in the next little bit, what with Kurdish nationalists, and the Iraqi government both having vested interests there (lots of oil in that region) and the interests of Turkey and Iran in respect to Kurdish nationalism. As I said, it'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
