N.J. Casino to Fire Weightier Waitstaff

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - At the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, cocktail servers who have trouble squeezing into their low-cut bustiers will soon be squeezed out — out of a job, that is.

The casino is threatening to fire servers who gain more than 7 percent of their body weight, infuriating women's rights advocates, the cocktail servers' union and others who call it discriminatory. Under the policy, announced to employees last week, anyone who puts on too much gets an unpaid suspension of up to 90 days to get rid of it.

If they can't, they will be fired unless they are pregnant or have a medical condition contributing to their weight, casino officials said.

"Women should not have to starve themselves just to keep their jobs," said Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Research Center for Women & Families, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group. "The policy places enormous stress on all the women and encourages eating disorders to reach a totally arbitrary goal."

8. Unless the provision was in a signed contract when she started, I don't

see how a female waitress could be forced to do that. An actor or actress can be held to a contract that says they are not allowed to cut their hair, etc. But if they said after-the-fact that he/she wasn't allowed to or would get fired if he/she did, there is grounds for a nasty lawsuit.

A 5'8" lady weighing 110# with a typical bodyfat % in the 20s, who hits the weights, eats better, and gains a measly 8 pounds or so that'd look a LOT better on her in the process, could be out on the street.

Not a real typical scenario, but this is as good a time as any to point out that one's gravitational relationship to Planet Earth isn't the be-all and end-all of health, or either aesthetics.

and attract all types of men. You can be a skinny girl and not have a guy around you. Sexyness and attraction are not a question of weight, but attitude.

If a man looks at weight as the principal reason for being more or less attracted to a woman, that's a man I do not want to be with.

But then again, when was the last time you saw a normal size (size 14) woman on TV.. .a sitcom, drama (Camryn Menheim notwithstanding), reality TV etc. Yet, you see men-blobs everywhere. Until our skewed eyes and expectations are adjusted, this attitude will become more and more prevalent.
