Bush steps up fight against European safety testing (cancer vs chemicals)
Independent Digital (UK) Ltd

President George Bush is mounting an intensive campaign to force European countries to drop safety tests expected to save thousands of lives each year, internal US government documents seen by The Independent on Sunday reveal. Britain, which has been generally supportive, last week denounced the measures as "disastrously wrong".

The documents - which include diplomatic cables signed by the US Secretary of State, Colin Powell - show that the Bush administration has threatened Europe with trade sanctions if it goes ahead with the tests, which are designed to protect workers and the public from highly toxic chemicals. ---

The tests are designed to identify the most dangerous chemicals threatening Europeans, including cancer-causing and "gender-bender" substances, so that they can be controlled. Only a tiny proportion of the 100,000 or so man-made chemicals used in the EU has ever been tested for the effects on the people who use them. ---

The US pressure seems to be changing British policy. Up to now Britain has taken a generally favourable approach to the directive. But last week Patricia Hewitt denounced it as "disastrously wrong".

1. Good Lord!
As if he* hasn't done enogh harm already! This is not only morally reprehensible, but will further isolate us from the rest of the world.

After seeing Bill Moyers show last night, I'm still reeling from the sheer greed, spitefulness and mind bending stupidity of the * administration in regards to health and environment (let alone everything else). This is just too much! When will enough be enough for these murderers?

It's as if someone drew up a list of the most degenrative and perverted stands on issues and W is using it as his policy.

Disgusting is an understatement.

Guess they are afraid that some of the chemicals that prove to be dangerous are being used by their corporate cronies to make millions!

edited to change the word "millions" to "billions"

6. Diabolical
Are they really going to this far - trade sanctions so that they can sell poison and pain and end lives early and add another cross to taxpayers? Is this the pinnacle of our hypocrisy? Have we reached the pinnacle?

7. Unconscienable
The entire W-administration excels at conducting a war of insidious and profit-driven assaults on the right and the good. Bush, Powell and all this "President's men" have always acted in an entirely unconsienable fashion, especially in their condescending and xenophobic approach to what I must euphemistically call "their foreign policy". For them, it's always all about the $$. Talk about imperialism. This is toxic imperialism at it's literal worst.

8. On every issue, without fail
they come out on the side of bad people. I don't believe in Satan, but if I did it would be a sure bet that they are on his side "big time."

9. I am chemically sensitive
it is called MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivities)

If you go to an allergist you can be tested for
many things, pollen, pet dander, grass, foods,
but they will NOT test you for chemicals. If you
have MCS you have a politically incorrect disease
and are left to fend for yourself. This is what
the chemical companies want. They do NOT want
any concrete empirical data proving a link that
can lead to lawsuits and more regulations. This
is what happened to poisoned veterans and to
breast implant sick women. Did you know that
breast implants were made with over 30 chemicals
included within the silicone itself? Many are
known to be carcinogenic.
