Rafsanjani Signals Candidacy for President
Former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has implicitly told a group of lawmakers that he will make a comeback attempt in June. In the face of escalating foreign threats against the Islamic Republic, the experienced captain seems to be the best choice for the country’s number two job. Rafsanjani is now the head of Expediency Council – top arbitration body.

Imani said opponents of Mr Rafsanjani were waging a psychological war in a bid to dissuade him from making a comeback attempt for the Islamic Republic’s number two job. He was dismissing rumors that a group of lawmakers had petitioned Rafsanjani to pull out of the race.

Teymour Ali Asgari, a cleric lawmaker soliciting Rafsanjani for presidency, says an undermined government would serve the United States. “We can understand how our government will be harmed with a toothless president.”

Qualifying Rafsanjani as “the man of crises”, he said: “Mounting crisis in the region, escalating US threats and Iran’s nuclear brinkmanship are enough to necessitate the presidency of Mr Rafsanjani.”
