Pope and Bono Among 166 Nobel Peace Prize Nominees
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/nobel_peace_dc

OSLO (Reuters) - Pope John Paul (news - web sites) and rock star Bono are among 166 nominees for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize, with relief groups helping victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami among the favorites.

"We have received 166 nominations so far, of which 29 are organizations," the director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, Geir Lundestad, told Reuters on Thursday. "The geographical scope is wide."

Some names have been made public or leaked privately by people nominating them. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) was also among them.

But many Nobel watchers believe the 2005 award will go to an individual or a group involved with relief efforts after the devastating Dec. 26 tsunami, such as Save the Children or Oxfam.

The list of names is secret but some people publicize their suggestions for the 10 million Swedish crown ($1.43 million) prize, to be announced in October and awarded on Dec. 10.

1. I don't know...
The Organizations have done a lot over in the Indian Ocean, but Bono, on an individual basis, has done a tremendous amount to promote peace or, at least, try keeping the peace. In my opinion... Bono should get the prize. He's basically our generation's John Lennon.

2. Bono's next job
World Citizen Paul Hewson should be the Secretary-General of the United Nations at some point. He's one of the few people with high visibility and public recognition, charisma, committment to improving the lives of the disposessed, and boundless energy.

It's good that many celebs support things like peace and an end to hunger and war. But Bono puts it into action, even to the point of making nice with loathsome people. As much as I like U2, the man's talents are being wasted in rock music.

7. If we haven't seen them, maybe the Nobel Committee hasn't either.

10. If he had put as much effort opposing the war as he does on
opposing condoms and reproductive rights, he would be unbeatable..

11. we should consider ourselves lucky
that there is one religious world leader that is even as "liberal" as the current pope. When a replacement steps up, I'm afraid it will be someone very conservative again. That won't help our cause at all.

13. Hi etherealtruth!
:hi: I do think, as well, that we may end with a more conservative pontiff next time around.

14. God, I pray not...
I wish he would have fought the chimp harder on his immoral war in Iraq----but, I guess I need to cut the little old pope some slack, as he is very frail and he did stand up to "our" psycho.

15. Yes, he did....
I think if this all (Iraq war, etc.) was happening 20 years ago, it would be a different story. :hi:

16. It would be really nice...
... perhaps a gift from God, if we would have a strong pope who could zealously defend the values of social justice, fairness and tolerance----------OK, I'd like to see a lot of support for womens rights.

18. That's enough to get the Pope out of the running
That archaic stance on contraception and protection, which dooms people to disease and death, should be a disqualification from any consideration.
