Five U.S. Soldiers Killed in Iraq Attacks
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=domesticNews&storyID=7677234

MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - Five U.S. soldiers were killed in separate guerrilla attacks in Iraq, the U.S. military said Friday, three in or near the northern city of Mosul, one north of Baghdad and the fifth south of the capital.

<snip>

In the latest incident Friday, one soldier was killed and two were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near a U.S. military base north of the town of Diwaniya, about 180 km (110 miles) south of Baghdad, the military said.

Earlier Friday, a soldier was killed and two were wounded in a car bomb blast about 40 km (25 miles) north of the capital, the military said in a statement.

The other incidents happened Thursday. In the first, a car bomb exploded next to a U.S. army patrol in Mosul, killing one soldier and wounding three.

Another soldier was shot dead in an exchange of fire with guerrillas in Mosul. In addition, a roadside bomb killed a soldier and wounded another in an attack near Tal Afar, about 60 km (40 miles) west of Mosul

2. I wonder how long the network news organizations will spend on this?
Fifteen or twenty seconds? The attention spent on the casualties of this war is a national outrage.

5. Glad you didn't give up posting these items, leftchick
I recall some people giving you a rough time the other day, for no good reason. This is news that normally gets buried in the conventional media.

14. long story short...
I used an (EGAD) exclamation point at the end of my subject line. (1467!) meaning number of dead soldiers. Now I used that because I was shocked the number had jumped so high so quickly. And I read these death notices daily so it was shocking.

I was accused of being happy and or excited about the deaths. I ended up requesting the thread get locked because it got ugly. Sadly, out of the 30 some responses to the thread only 4 were for the original post of the soldiers deaths. :(

I won't be using exclamation points anymore. :eyes:

As should any other DUer who has been here for more than two days. I think some folks were just looking for a fight so they made one up.

Thank you for continuing to keep us informed, even if this sad news will be overlooked by the press in favor of Michael Jackson's flu.

19. Were most of the accusations from DLCers or new posters?
Wouldn't surprise me if so.

Some people need reading comprehension classes. Anyone who knows you knows there's no possible way you could be happy about any of the deaths on either side.

Those people were fools to take you to task over a punctuation mark that they probably willfully took out of context. Shame on them.

25. Leftchick, keeping these deaths news worthy
is absolutely essential to preserve what is left of this country's soul. When any of the deaths, or injuries, are considered of such little importance that reporting them, and using an exclamation point because of the horrific nature of the message, becomes the subject of a debate, I realize that we must be in deeper trouble than I realized.

I applaud your efforts, and always look for your posts. I think most of us appreciate them deeply.

7. As Long As It's Poor and Working Class Kids Dying In Iraq
The American public and the American media don't care. Trust me, if it were upper middle class White kids dying in Iraq instead of going to Princeton, then there would be a huge uproar in this nation.

In the end, there will always be a price to pay for hypocrisy.

13. Democracy is a process....
...not an event--like landing your sorry ass on an air-craft carrier and touting a "Mission Accomplished" banner OR staging a meaningless election.

How many teary-eyed publicity stunts will this shitty president stage--before America finally understands that there is no winning this sickening, failed, immoral, costly war?

15. But wait...they had elections...there was supposed to be a party
and rose petals falling from the sky and ice cream for everyone....someone call Perle and tell him that something's wrong.

Sadly no one cares....Americans are just busy working and consuming...not worried until their own are drafted..

according to a Marine friend who is scheduled to come home from Iraq next month. He went over there all gung-ho about helping the Iraqi people. He is extremely disillusioned now.
