Iranian FM to visit India, gas imports seen as key topic

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Iran's foreign minister is to begin a three-day visit to India for talks following New Delhi's decision to launch discussions on securing gas to fuel its energy-hungry economy.

Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazzi will address the India-Iran Joint Business Council Meeting Monday before holding talks with his Indian counterpart Natwar Singh, the Indian foreign ministry said in a statement Saturday. snip

No details were given about the agenda but analysts expect the import of natural gas to be a key topic of discussion.

The Iranian minister's visit comes after the Indian cabinet earlier this month permitted the oil ministry to open talks to secure gas supplies and help ease heavy dependence on imported fuel.

Iran holds 27.5 trillion cubic meters (971.2 trillion cubic feet) of gas reserves, ranking second in the world after Russia.

2. As the schemers in Washington look on,
beads of sweat start to build on their foreheads. The very thing they were hoping they could avert -- an alliance between the emerging powers, gets pushed into reality because of their self-fulfilling actions.

They thought it was a linear equation = more muscle power equals more success. Oil, natural gas reserves and other resources are the source of economic progress, energy, and life itself. It must be secured at any cost. Little did they realize India is hard-bought. It could be a small thing like 1.1 billion to 330 million.

I can easily visualize closed-door meetings in Washington. A long conference table. Sweaty, pasty-faced executives, obsessively reviewing a flip chart showing the world's natural resources and how to get their hands on as much as possible.

The obstacle, as it's always been, are the people sitting on top of them. They recall Hugo Chavez's recent taunts. The cursing starts and the fists pound the table. The language starts to turn foul. They think about Chavez recently signing a contract to sell oil to China.

China.....looming on the horizon as the dreaded superpower. India.....

As we spend ourselves into bankruptcy trying to hold onto a mirage, the rest of the world bides its time. As we spin our wheels in Iraq, they know the sands of the hourglass are running low......
