It's persuasion. You convince the other side to do what you are asking for. You use tact, diplomacy, patience, to convince them that what you want, is what they want, also. It can be a win-win situation.

Negotiation works in successive stages. You NEVER start threatening at the outset, which is exactly what Conda-liar is doing. The opponent goes on the defensive, and he looks for ways to retaliate.

A good example would be for me to take a trip to the local Radio Shack. I bought something at the store, and it turns out to be defective.

Now, instead of going in there and being reasonable and asking for a replacement, I start lamblasting the clerk, in front of others, that I'm going to sue, and your establishment sucks, and no one should ever shop here again, etc.

I make a big ass of myself. Now, the clerk has no choice but to get revenge on me. And he does. He gets a new part, but he goes into the back room, while I'm waiting......and he takes his time.......goes real s-l-o-w just to piss me off.

Meanwhile, in the back room, clerk is busy sabotaging the new part. He unhooks it in several places, puts it back in the box, and comes out and brings me my replacement. I sourly take it and go back home.

Imagine my volcanic eruption as the 2ND part is defective. I got what I deserved.

Miss Manners doesn't understand the first thing about human relations. She has no class, no tact. All she gets is resistance.

And -- after all, she is the servant of the Dark Forces.
