Panelists Decry Bush Science Policies
Fewer Scientists Are Being Consulted or Funded by the Bush Administration, Researchers Complain

By PAUL RECER
The Associated Press

Feb. 20, 2005 - The voice of science is being stifled in the Bush administration, with fewer scientists heard in policy discussions and money for research and advanced training being cut, according to panelists at a national science meeting.

Speakers at the national meeting of the American Association for Advancement of Science expressed concern Sunday that some scientists in key federal agencies are being ignored or even pressured to change study conclusions that don't support policy positions.

The speakers also said that Bush's proposed 2005 federal budget is slashing spending for basic research and reducing investments in education designed to produce the nation's future scientists.

And there also was concern that increased restrictions and requirements for obtaining visas is diminishing the flow to the U.S. of foreign-born science students who have long been a major part of the American research community.

1. It's not just stem cell research or the environment
--- and scientific leadership is passing from our grasp - just as industrial leadership is passing from our grasp.

I guess if you believe in the Apocalypse and the Rapture -- it doesn't matter.

4. If their theology is wrong---
they will be driving our economy into the cellar -- and the dislocations of society and the body politic will not be pleasant, and will not inure to anyone's benefit.

A shrinking economy makes an unhealthy society and exacerbates inequalities and hatreds and animosities and fissures and fault lines.

5. Science is a threat to fundamentalist Xtian philosophy...so let's kill it.
Science mandates a level of evidence that cannot be met by those who want to believe that the world is 6000 yrs old and evolution is not a process of nature.

Let's hope that the reports of life signatures on Mars won't lead to further cuts at NASA or a preemptive bombing campaign.

Factoid - At the same time that the Repukes were going on-and-on about the horrors of Alzheimer's disease after Reagan's death, Bush was seeking to restrict research funding ACROSS THE BOARD at the National Institute of Health. The number of Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers, funded by the NIH/NIA, are being diminished...quietly. I know. As a researcher in Alzheimer's disease and dementia, I have been affected negatively by this push to cut funding. Other individuals in my field are forced to seek funding from the drug companies and/or private foundations.

7. dumber and dumber
looks like the 51% got what they want:

As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and
more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and
glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire
at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

This is what happens when idiotic ideology trumps science. Russia never survived Lysenkoism and we will never survive Jesusitas.

11. Anyone want to join my group "Taxpayers against scientific studies"?
I say, to hell with the studies if you are only going to change the results later. Stop wasting my money. Just start with the results that you want the study to come up with and send that out as a press release.
