A published report says an internal audit at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has found that funds to protect the nation's ports have been spent without sufficiently focusing on the most vulnerable facilities.
A New York Times story published Sunday says the department's inspector general has concluded that the spending policy could compromise the nation's ability to defend against terrorist attacks.
The audit found that considerable money spent on many smaller ports should have gone to larger, more vital ports in cities like Los Angeles and New York, which receive most of the goods coming into the country, making them prime targets for terrorists.

PORTSMOUTH — Two of the city’s top officials sharply disagree with an analysis that the nation’s smaller ports in states like New Hampshire are getting too much homeland security money.
If anything, states like New Hampshire are still not getting enough money from the federal government to protect places like Portsmouth Harbor from potential terrorist attacks, said Portsmouth Mayor Evelyn Sirrell on Saturday. The money the city has received has been “very slow in coming,” Sirrell said.
The New York Times reported that in an audit released this week, the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general concluded that hundreds of millions of dollars have been distributed to protect ports since Sept. 11, 2001, without sufficiently directing the money to those that are most vulnerable.
