Australia is about to assume command of the naval forces in the northern part of the Gulf, the Australian Navy having played a major role in enforcing UN sanctions over the decade prior to the March 2003 invasion.
Hill said the aim of the northern fleet was to protect the oil installations, and to guard against terrorist infiltrations.
Responding to a question on the Australian Broadcasting Commission network, Hill said, 'Our position is that the international community should seize the moment and the momentum created by the election to lock in support for the Iraqi people, those that really want an opportunity for freedom.'
