Bush burning over tapes

He's feeling betrayed by stealthy pal

BY KENNETH R. BAZINET
and DAVE GOLDINER
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS

The White House lashed out yesterday at the "former" Bush family friend who secretly tape-recorded the future President discussing sensitive issues like gays and drug use.

(snip)

"I had a choice to either write propaganda about the Bushes or write accurately and fairly based on what I knew," Wead told ABC's "Good Morning America."

Wead said his publisher insisted on listening to the tapes to confirm anonymous sources he cited in his new book. The New York Times then got wind of the tapes, Wead said, and it "all became unraveled."

(snip)

"It ought to be damaging," said Baruch College political scientist Doug Muzzio. "It's hypocritical to say one thing now but to have said other things ... in the past."

1. But there's nothing in the tapes we didn't already know...
1) Bush used drugs (although I think weed is only one of a myriad of drugs he's used).

2) Bush is a homophobe.

3) Bush is a hypocrite.

8. True, but he has constantly LIED about it
A punishable offense, if you're a dem.

And now it's in his own voice, on tape.

Never get any real traction . . . Even the Gannon thing is merely going to be a blip on the radar, unfortunately. The willingly blind are adamant about their blindness . . .

But then again, there's no "liberal media" out there to do the dirty work.

47. This tape release is a RED HERRING. Beware, people!
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 12:48 PM by Julius Civitatus
These tapes do not reveal anything we didn't know, and even so, they don't seem to reveal much. Not only does it seem mild, but it wouldn't matter anyway, since Bush has already been reinstalled for a second term. Who cares? Reports of Bush's troubling drug habits have been around since 1999, and they certainly did not stop the devoted Red-state Murkans to vote for him. IOKIYAR, remember?

This "revelation" is a Rovian distraction from the real issue: someone in the White House got his rent-a-boyfriend Gannon/Guckert past security on a daily basis for almost TWO years.

These tapes reveal nothing new, and they come out at a time when the WH needs a media distraction from the fact they've been caught with an obvious plant in the press room. A plant that turned out had a very sketchy past and is quickly becoming a massive scandal with the potential to reveal some very embarrassing connections within the Republican party.

Ignore this non-story and focus on what matters. They are worried.

55. Totally agree
My theory is that someone in the WH got wind of evidence of Bush's past drug use and whipped up this phony tape to beat them to the punch. Makes the president look reasonable (aaah poor kid, why should past indiscretions disqualify him for the president--isn't this America after all?). And then it distracts form the Gannon/Guckert story. Brilliant. Masterful. Put in just enough bad to make it seem credible. What genius could have thought up something so devious and subtle? Well, let's see. What other campaign organized a press release about a fake bugging. Oh, that's right. Karl Rove just days before the Texas governor's election.

Notice how the Scaife-bitch Drudge (do not forget, people: Matt Drudge is a paid rethug operative) has been suspiciously SILENT about Gannon/Guckert... yet he is pushing the "tape release" red herring.

I wonder if Matt's name would appear in Gannon's little black boock...

BTW, this is WHY they are scared shitless.

Don't forget - dancing nude on the top of a table . Drudge seemed to
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 03:08 PM by higher class
the only one who carried this back in 1999 or 2000. Said that backers of a candidate for president were busy rounding up 'stuff' to clean the air - one item was a photo of the candidate dancing nude on the top of a table WITH BOOTS ON. Other candidates were Gore, Bradley, Larouche, Buchanan, Bauer, etc. Think it was one of them?

As time goes by...I often think what the interrogation was like...now George, is there anything else we should clean up before we announce? Can you imagine the litany of stories and what they had to do to eradicate the evidence?

Or have I declared him guilty before he is proven innocent?

this;

Wead: But you've denied using cocaine in the past...

bush*: I didn't deny anything

That is from memory so Wead's statement may not be exact, but bush*s is. I didn't bookmark the thread with that part but if you search bush*s quote you may be able to find it.

87. Did Wead specifically mention coke, or was it "drugs"?
I can't remember...

I do remember Dumbyass's reply, and it's true...He didn't deny it. He changed the subject, saying something about regretting mistakes he'd made in his "youth" (that would be age 40 or so). He's also made a point of calling himself "born again", to the delight of the fundies, who figure he's forgiven for everything he may have done in the past.

I want to know if people who are currently incarcerated for drug violations can get out of jail if they become "born again". Seems only fair if junior can get away with it.

90. In the snippet I saw here in DU, the quote had the word COCAINE
in it. I did not look further into it though. It would be weird for someone to replace 'drugs' with 'cocaine' since they would be assuming a lot but I suppose it's not out of the question. Remember this was apparently a conversation between Wead and bush*, bush* publicly kept referring to his hypothetical ability to truthfully answer the did you use drugs question on federal forms. It was his moving target answer to *WHEN* he could answer that caused people to search for these forms and work backward to figure out when he allegedly "stopped" using drugs. he NEVER answered the question directly, and that alone in my opinion should have sunk his ass.

The guys with the big big bucks use the Foulwell types to control their ignorant masses. So Joe Redneck and his family go to church and hear all about how they need to forgive Dumbyass, because that's what "god" really wants. So of course, they play right into it, because they don't want to go to hell.

Too bad they don't realize that they're creating hell right here on earth.

The Bush tape story has shot into the headlines ABOVE his Brussels trip (haha). I love it. This story cannot do him any good. Any fundie who says Bush is a good convert now maybe will say well why did he get a second chance but he wouldn't give the same chance to other coke users. If they bring up Clinton inhaling, Clinton didn't put in strict drug laws as guv trying to lock everybody up who did the same as he did. Also pot and coke aint the same; I don't recall Clinton ever being accused of coke use.

68. It is hugely important; he basically admits on the tape he did drugs
All his other interviews were evasions about "youthful indiscretions"

What's important here is the sonnovabitch was throwing other people in jail for the same thing he was doing. He didn't give anyone else a second chance when they were caught doing cocaine. I hope this story gets legs. This morning on MSNBC Ron Reagan was debating some GOP schill who kept trying to outscream Reagan on this topic. The GOP doesn't like their boy being outed like this. This is a way worse media distraction going at the very core of the Bush moral values (as in there are none)

imho, it is just a guise to give them an out from Gannon.

edit to add that this will also give them an excuse to bring up clinton's inhalation and god knows they don't need an excuse to bring up clinton anymore than they already do. i can just see this turning into clinton's druggie past instead of bush's druggie past.

120. Red Herring - and a big one at that - now we have 'tapes'
even though drudge is deliberately trying to ignore the gannon-loose canon affair this wild and crazy guy is not disappearing and being eclipsed by another news spin cycle. and why not? because the lingering question still remains to be answered: how did gannon obtain a hard pass and not have to submit to major homeland security scrutiny? the WH
is refusing to deal with this-thus the story continues to grow even more mysterious (plus gannon keeps going on the air to blabber about it).
who is gannon really assisting/working for... NOW? who is offering him bodily protection and/or paying him to 'stay in public view'?
and these tapes with respect to the Wead book? it just begs the question, what ELSE may be on those tapes? if rover and his thugbots could get rid of and wanted to get rid of boy gannon-they could do that in less than a minute. IF gannon is really a nobody with no power to muck things up even more, than why hasn't he been silenced?
I remember watergate and what is going on now with "leaks" and "tapes" and talkers is practically the script.

Well that's a DUH, but, it says to me they are worried that we lowly Dems on our sites are getting traction, in other words, real news. One can only hope. Keep on bloggin!

Bush is a pot head that let Jeff James Guckert Gannon into the WH.
I don't feel it should be a distraction but a supplement. I don't think it should be the lead story, but a parallel one with equal time. I believe that they are covering up or trying to divert attention away from something because Reagan's 11th commandment was to never talk bad of another republican. Don't let it be the story that gets swept under the rug, keep them both out there along with Social Security and the war in Iraq.

this whole tape thing is suspicious ...

a distraction

Rove likely has many up his sleeve to play when needed ...

since Poppy was CIA, I suspect they have people come in and do a check for recording devices/bugs ... they don't trust anyone ...

Big deal he lied about smoking pot, he also lied and invaded a country under false pretenses. Isn't that one just a tiny bit worse? Hello? Bush smoking a few joints didn't kill almost 1500 Americans and tens of thousands Iraqis.

I guess it doesn't matter to this author since he wasn't trying to market his book at that time.

Heard that statement last week and got this pit in my stomach. Where have we heard that before. Gawd the public is gullible. There is nothing in those tapes that is in any way damaging to Dubya. Unless perhaps the fundies are a little ticked off that he doesn't hate gays as much as they do. The man who made them has been a very loyal supporter for many, many years. They've been sitting on these tapes a long time, saving them for whenever a distraction might be needed. Who knows how many other similar distractions are out there waiting?

She would sacrifice herself, unlike * to save the children. However, her distraction tactics remind me of the BS they put out to distract our citizens from the truth.

There is probably MUCH more that could be divulged, but the WH's attack dogs are out in force today, saying Mead ISN'T really, nor has he EVER been a close friend of The Idiot's!

What they are touting is that Mead is only using this information to sell books. Of course, we ALL know just how devious this administration is and the excuse that he didn't want his "girls" to try pot is laughable!!! I would bet GOOD money that they have already had few "tokes" of the wacky weed and may still be at it. I mean they have had a penchant for alcohol to some extent having been caught on several occasions.

And just adding my two cents, I'd take the weed over alcohol any day! Generally, tokers simply get laid back whereas those who drink alcohol are more apt to get out a drive or become more confrontational. Despite polls that say there is less drug use, I don't feel there's much accuracy to them. Weed has been around since forever and I dare say it will always be available.

At any rate, between CNN & MSNBC they are giving LOTS of coverage to those who are attacking Mead!! So what else is new??? Same old, same old!

Whether his slurring and stumbling is a result of drug or alcohol abuse, or comes from some other source, I don't know. But he did used to be a much better speaker than he is now.

28. I
Completely agree.

What do the tapes show? That Bush is concerned about some poor kid trying pot like he did. This is expert Rove, who has gotten far subtler with his dirty tricks. Interestingly, this is the only tape, of many that got out. The rest were contributed to the future Bush library.

Sometimes I get disturbed with how easily the democrats and we liberals can be led around by our noses, by who? By the media.

At least I've seen signs of people on this board waking up to the reality that the media isn't liberal, and they are steering you. I kept telling you people to not be led during Dean's demise, or his execution by the media. Anything they want to lead you to, you should go the other way. I can hardly stand listening to any of the mainstream anymore, preferring Air America's slightly left-of-center views.

The Nazis have taken hold, and most of America is delightfully unaware. We are on the precipice of WW III.

18. Why does this whole tape thing reek so badly OF HORSESHIT?
This is really bad political theater presented by people who couldn't act their way out of wet paper bags.

This has the earmarks of all past engineered Bush scandals:

1) It's embarrassing, but not really "too" embarrassing. Who the hell cares if anyone smoked pot?

2) The materials of the delivery of the story can easily be (and probably will be) discredited, thus shining doubt on the story itself, even though the story itself is likely true.

3) This story is getting a lot of media play, while it is simultaneously ignored that for two years a male prostitute had access to the highest reaches of national security.

What a crock of shit. Don't believe it for an instant. Bush has done a lot harder drugs than pot, and he exhibits all the signs of being a CURRENT problem drinker.

IF the tapes surprised Bushco, and IF there was anything really damaging on them, this guy is going to keep that hidden. This is all flattering to the Chimp, as I see it. Even the part about pot -- he's cast as not telling so that children don't try it, whereas he ridicules that reckless Gore for telling the truth (and turning kids into potheads)!

Fox was emphasizing the "he said he loves Laura" part, and the "he doesn't think we should kick gays" part (how big of him -- yet he did imply they're "sinners"). Both seem to me to be responses to the JimJeff scandal, in addition to the whole Bush-as-victim thing.

21. Doug Wead is a slimeball.... worth snooping around
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 09:25 AM by dutchdemocrat
An Amway whore.

Doug Wead, along with then-wife Gloria, were Diamonds in Amway. Personally sponsored by Dexter and Birdie Yager, Wead earned large sums of money speaking at Amway-related functions throughout the Yager organization. His Amway tentacles spread out from the US into other countries, including France. In 1986, the French government began investigating Amway. They determined that the Amway business in France was a dangerous mind-control cult, and a fraudulent business. Amway France promptly terminated the distributorship of Wead's associate, kingpin Jean Godzich, from whose group many of the complaints had originated.

Wead and Godzich then began a new multi-level marketing "business" in France, called "Groupement" or GEPM. Their product line consisted of Amway products, apparently purchased by Wead and then re-packaged. Their business structure was identical to Amway's, and the cultic activities were as blatant. The French authorities, after receiving numerous complaints about GEPM, issued 15 arrest warrants. Thirteen distributors were arrested. The other two warrants were for Godzich and Wead. Godzich fled the country, taking a substantial amount of money with him. Wead never returned to France. GEPM trials were still being held as recently as June, 2000.

A source who has been investigating the activities of Amway and GEPM in France, and who has been present during some of the legal proceedings, describes Groupement's manipulation of its members -- the majority of whom lost significant amounts of money -- as a "criminogenic ritual belief system." He claims that at one time, Wead and Godzich also shared offices in Arizona.

If this is the background of a "trusted adviser," what does this say about the leader who listens to him?

http://members.tripod.com/~nomorescams/ambush.htm

In light of the above, you can bet that Amway will not be closing its doors anytime soon. Its illegal scheme will remain in tact for at least as long as Bush is in the White House.

But there is one oddity about the Bush-Amway gang that Eric recently pointed out. In most cases of fraud, crooks don’t steal from their own. So this makes Amway unique, because it pays the current administration to protect a multi-billion dollar fraud that targets Conservative Christian Republicans almost exclusively.

Eric said he wondered what kind of animals would eat their own? If my memory serves me correctly, I think pigs do that.

I can honestly say that while the tapes are not _bad_ they do point out a nuber of things for just how planned aheady the invasion of Iraq was, just how obviously planned he was being regroomed and washed clean by his people.

It tells a lot without saying much, yet that which is can develope from these statements could be devistating to suggest that he had planned to 'go it alone' and lied to the people and congress.

It's not perfect, but it has potential to do some massive damage if someone is careful.

53. Shouldn't he be burning up over Gannon?
You would think having a gay prostitute and the breach of security that he represents, would be much more upsetting for someone so concerned with his own personal safety.

There is no way to date a recording, They could have set this up. its the look over here folks, nothing to see behind the curtain. And the media is lapping it up. No new revelations.

57. A question comes to mind.
WHY is it that when a Democrat smokes weed he's an immoral liberal, but when a repuke does it the media and others chalk it up to a youthful indiscretion?

91. To this day they talk about the pot smoking of the Clinton administration
with derision, with put-down, as in scandalous.

There is one great thing coming out of all of this --- his legacy will be - biggest hypocrites in all of civilization.

And this
http://www.consortiumnews.com/2004/051304.html

Bush reportedly learned this method of signaling to Christian fundamentalists by frequently referring to his Christian faith from Doug Wead, an adviser to his father's 1988 presidential campaign. Wead had written a series of memos on how to communicate with evangelical Christians. Wead's motto was "signal early and signal often," meaning that references to God should be put in speeches and meetings should be held with celebrity Evangelicals.

There's no way this is just a shot-in-the-dark releasing. This is a timed response to Propogannon.

65. "Bush would become a pivotal figure in history like Churchill or Gandi"?

Umm, try more like Stalin or Hitler.... :grr:

Quote from article/interview with Wead:

Wead insisted he made the tapes - from 1998 to 2000 - for a book because he believed Bush would become a "pivotal figure in history," like "Churchill or Gandhi."

88. hog wash!!!!!!!
at first when I heard them, I thought, well at least he's not as hateful as the right wing fundies about gays, and he said he didn't want kids doing what he did with marijuana, but then, right after that, I had an uncontrollable feeling of - this is staged CRAP to make him look fallible but caring... that's all it is. there's nothing horribly damaging there, but there IS something horribly damaging about the prostitute working in the WH with easy access when others with real names and credentials were denied even HALF of Guckert/Gannon's access! Oh, this really reeks. Keep talking about Gannon, because someone has to answer how the hell he really got in there, we know it's Rove and possibly Bushista, too.

116. Rove is simply buying time with this one
He realizes they're all in deep shit if the truth behind Gannon gets out. This is major, and he needs some time to set the media up like he did Dan Rather, to get them to take the bait on some quasi giggilo story that can later be refuted, thereby taking all of the actual pertinent facts down with it as being ALL bullshit. Just like the Rather mess did.

If need be, Rove's media will purposely take the fall for this one.

Gannongate. I hope all it does is compound the problem, but you know they will use this... I'm willing to bet that his pot-smoking past will be all over the mainstream media this week, with just a few minutes relegated to coverage of the Gannon scandal.

(on edit, I see I'm not saying anything not already posted here...)

102. * is no stranger to hypocrisy, BUT (sit down, y'all):
1. The gay commentary was rather surprising, given today's talk of constitutional amendments, et al.

(now sit down)

2. But FWIW, Mr. Bush sounds TOTALLY SINCERE regarding drugs. I will give him some real credit (apart from the paltry Gore imitation that came out of nowhere, but this was before the 2000 (s)election...)

The number of unpleasant things about the guy that became apparent early on ... the way he treats people working for him, or how belittling he is towards those he feels can't give him what he wants (and especially, can't defend themselves) ... why are they shocked by these revelations?
