Siena poll finds U.S. is ready for female president
A majority of registered U.S. voters in a new poll said the nation will be ready for its first woman president in the next election.

The Siena College survey of more than 1,100 voters across the country shows 62 percent think the United states is ready for a woman in the White House in 2008.

Asked specifically about four potential candidates, 53 percent said New York's Democratic Senator Hillary Clinton should run for president in three years, while 42 percent said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice -- a top Cabinet member in the Republican Bush administration -- should run.

Also, 33 percent said North Carolina's Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole should seek the presidency, while 13 percent said that of California's Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer.

1. This could be good news
but I wonder if this is one of those polls where people lie because they don't want to admit they wouldn't support a woman running for president.

4. So sick of PR prep for Hillary!
Ya know, just like the Rovians, throw out lies or exaggerated polls to brainwash the sheeple instead of saying what really matters to the voters.

Her remarks dismissing Iraqi insurgents' motives as purely "desperation" and her partiality toward Sharon instead of Palestinians make her a right of center, Republican-lite, manipulating politician, just like the rest of them.

I could give a twit that she would be a "female President."

I don't buy it. Caveat emptor.

10. I disagree - Hillary is not GOP Lite
"Iraqi insurgents' motives as purely "desperation".."

I did not catch this

There are 2 groups of insurgents - the big car bomb type from Al Q that I suspect are "desperate"

and the Sunni who do the IED roadside thing and who want a political deal that does not include an Iranian like religious state (indeed our State Department is current in negotiations with these folks)

Obviously Dem primary choices will be many - and it is my guess that Hillary will not be your choice.

But Zell defines GOP lite - not Hillary.

15. Not on Meet the Press. . .
but upon her arrival in Iraq, Hillary said the following:

"The fact that you have these suicide bombers now, wreaking such hatred and violence while people pray, is to me, an indication of their failure," Clinton said.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A38472-2005Feb19.html?sub=new

Big assumption here that these insurgents are just disgruntled, desperate Sunni getting revenge against Shia; it doesn't even cross her mind that they are opposing American oil imperialism. She could at least disagree publicly with the pre-emptive Bush policy for oil corporatism, then I would consider her a real Democrat.

She's playing the middle, as Kerry did, certainly to win pro-Israel votes in NY, and pro-military might vote everywhere so she won't be seen as weak on defense for 2008.

Then, there's the election fraud issue; after Senator Barbara Boxer stood up for us, Hilliary co-sponsors with Barbara a bill to secure the vote.

Every move is measured for her 2008 run. I'm turned off by the cautionary PR.

I certainly will vote for other candidates with convictions and gumption. . .Clark/Boxer 2008.

BTW, Zell Miller is an out 'n out raging Republican who should have left Dems years ago.

caution is not bad as long as it is clear you have strong views that guide you and that you will not give up.

the second half of the above may need some work by Hill over the next 2 years - but I will wait and see.

53. How about saying nothing re: insurgents' motives?
Instead she's making this pronouncement that insurgents are failing at their attempt to stop Iraqi election process. . .she's grandstanding for 2008.

And how about showing troop support by purposing getting them home asap instead of second-guessing the insurgents' motives.. . or say the new Iraqi leaders should address insurgents' demands. . .good ole self-determination for Iraq without U.S calling the shots.

Fact is Iraq is an oil colony for us and security for Sharon/Israel and those U.S. troops won't be coming home anytime soon. . .and Hillary's all for this.

I'm sick of the Hillary in '08 crowd. I believe she's guaranteed to be a dead-bang loser regardles if they run her against a dead guy, and I'm in N. California. I'm serious. She'd lose here unless the repubes ran another bushit. She's got no traction with the swing vote here whatsoever. But the mindless NY juggernaut is in gear, so we might as well get comfortable with the Green Party. Cause she's either going to shove her way into being the dem nominee like a good yuppie (even though she's clearly no longer young), and lose. Or she's going to fracture that coalition that formed to oust the chimp. Either way it's a bad scene for meaningful change.

he joined us Dems for 2004 race.

He should return to Independent since Dems are all over the map so much that the label is meaningless today.

He may have worn a uniform most of his life but that doesn't mean he was Republican. Check out his positions from 2004 primaries:
http://clark04.com/issues/

As a result, George McGovern endorsed Clark as a progressive candidate in 2004.

for switching hats with a Serbian General which was a subtler way to deal with the enemy instead of just using force. I agree with this article by James Hall which addresses your myopic view of Clark as a General:

"After General Wesley Clark's speech in Little Rock last week, the Republican smear machine revved into high gear. But the best dirt the talk radio honchos could find to throw at the general was a hat-switching incident in Prestina during the lead-up to the Kosovo War. General Clark might be guilty of swapping hats with a Serbian general, but I suspect that Clark's detractors worry more about him wanting to try on another hat-that of President of the United States. And against an increasingly vulnerable George W. Bush, he's looking mighty good. . ."

because his Serbian Generals act on their own, not by his orders. . .I disagree strongly.

And I have no doubt Clark is for justice once all the evidence is presented against both Milosevic and that Serbian General.

61. Hillary is not Repub-lite and ...
she would be very qualified to be president. I happen to think it would be an uphill battle for any woman to run for President but I believe she could beat anybody the Republicans get to run against her.

People like you have so much vitriol for her that I just don't understand. If she's not your choice, fine -- don't vote for her.

If the choice narrows down to her or a Republican though, then who would you vote for? The Republican?

Why are you so anti-Israel? The United States has been a long-time ally of Israel and we have typically stood by Israel in times of crisis.

Why single out Hillary for your antipathy? She has said on numerous occasions that she believes in a two-state solution to the Palestinian/Israel situation. She's not anti-Arab/Persian/Palestinian or anti-anybody.

Iraqi insurgents happen to be terrorists. And that's okay with you? How can you attribute their actions to anything but desperation? I don't think we should be in Iraq either but since we're there we have to fix what we've broken. That's the only way we can get our troups out of there safely.

If you don't like our politicians, then don't vote for them. They're too moderate or centrist and not "pure" enough for the ultra/radical-left who believes that all Republicans as well as Democrats have been bought and paid for by the corporations.

Clinton isn't perfect and neither are our other Dem leaders but they're the only thing we've got standing between us and the 4th Reich.

68. Whewie. . .where do I start to respond. . .
you must be her daughter. . .LOL with such a post!

Well, I never said Hillary was not qualified to be President.

I just don't trust her politics. Same attitude as with Kerry's campaign, taking my support for granted because you are assured I'd pick Hillary against any Repub.

I played along in 2004, when all along I knew Clark was the best choice hands down.

This time around, I'm sticking to my first choice because I have the right to be part of the selection process, not just insiders and advertising agents.

I'm probably going to remain an Independent when this is all over but I have hope that Dean is going to listen to more of us come primary-time. . .I'm still hopeful for the Dems to nominate someone the people really want, not a Republican-lite nominee.

As for Israel, Clark says we should be having a Mideast summit with all regional nations re: Iraq and probably Palestine. . .he's all for regional self-determination. I agree w/him. Hillary's still for Israel-Palestinian negotiations to resolve their problems now that Arafat is dead. . .this is old strategy which I think those Arabs who feel rage against our outside intervention are being ignored as usual.

So there you have it, my clarification if you're really interested. In our imperfect world led by imperfect politicians, I'm hoping the Dems pick someone who breaks out of the same-ole-same-ole mold with his/her new strategies and tenacity. . .I'm looking to support Clark/Boxer 2008.

We could go from being allowed to vote to voting for a woman American President! That has a very good ring to it!
Nelson Mandela told Oprah that the world needs women in world leadership. I don't have any idea where she is politically, but she could well have some good advice for women in world politics. She does care about women all over the world and works hard to help them find some form of independence.
Believe it or not, the US is still behind in its respect for women of political strength and if * has his way, they will go back 100 years!

Americans Say U.S. Is Ready For Female President, Poll Says

POSTED: 1:12 pm EST February 22, 2005

ALBANY, N.Y. -- More than six in 10 voters believe the United States is ready for a woman president in 2008 and 53 percent of the voters think Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, a New York Democrat, should try for the job, a nationwide poll has found.

The poll, conducted by the Siena College Research Institute and sponsored by the Hearst Newspapers, found that 81 percent of voters surveyed would vote for a woman for president; 62 percent said the country is ready for a woman president; and 67 percent said a female president would be better than a male chief executive in handling domestic issues.

Other national polls have identified the former first lady as the favorite among Democratic voters for the party's presidential nomination. In the Siena poll, 60 percent of voters said they expect a woman to be on the Democratic ticket for president in 2008. Only 18 percent of voters said they expected the 2008 Republican ticket to be headed by a woman.

(snip)

"There was very little difference between men (64 percent) and woman (60 percent) on whether the country was ready for a woman president in 2008," said Douglas Lonnstrom, director of the Albany-area research institute.

1) 60% of the voters? You can't win an election going in with 40% of the voters lost to you from the outset.
2) 53% said Hillary should run. And are 15% of those people freepers who want to sucker us into running a candidate that loses 40% of the vote from the get-go?
3)Is it possible that this poll is Roved?

Don't get me wrong. I would love to see a strong, just woman president. But until we get that (and every other poll) up at 85% or higher, let's just forget about it.

Although, on the other hand, if no better candidates step up to the plate, might as well make history by running a female presidental candidate. At least that will be our party's legacy.

In the Siena poll, 60 percent of voters said they expect a woman to be on the Democratic ticket for president in 2008. Only 18 percent of voters said they expected the 2008 Republican ticket to be headed by a woman.

<snip>

The Albany-area pollsters found that 37 percent of voters felt Clinton should not run for president.

On the Republican side, 42 percent of voters said U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice should run for the White House while 41 percent said she should not and 33 percent said Sen. Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina should run for president while 48 percent said she should not do that.

31. They SAY it but
they don't really mean it. It's going to be along long time before this country will accept a woman President, they wouldn't even accept a V. Pres.

34. America is dieing of testosterone poisoning. It's time for a testosteron

It's time for a testosterone free president. I'd vote for a woman. Just not a woman from the current power structure.

It's time the entire power elite were replaced. Both dems and repugs got us where we are today. We need to kick the whole bunch of them out and replace them with grass roots people. Including Pillery.

38. Except that
I put some credit in some political commentator's thesis that someone who has been in the national, public eye for more than 12 years (e.g. John Kerry and of course Hillary) cannot be elected president. You have to be someone from the states, such as Bill Clinton was as Governor of Arkansas. I think that has the ring of truth.

Let's hope we get an amendment to the Constitution to allow people who weren't born in the U.S. to run and maybe we could get Jennifer Granholm of Michigan to run.

This seems a more likely scenario than Hillary's (much as I like her).

43. 62 percent? That is not enough to get a woman elected president
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 10:56 PM by Democat
Only 62 percent think a woman would be ok? How is that good news for a female candidate, other than showing movement in the right direction?

That means that a woman candidate would start with 38% less possible votes than a man to start with. The 38% who don't want a woman may vote for any man over any woman. She would have to convince almost 100% of the voters who "might" vote for a woman to voter for her. A white male candidate only needs to convince 50% of all eligible voters that he is the right choice.

If these numbers are right, it's not very realistic to think a woman has a real chance of winning today.

Could any living, breathing, being be even close to as incompetent as this faux president we have now? Doubt it.

51. I'm glad America's finally ready for a Woman President
but Hillary Clinton, Condi Rice, Elizabeth Dole?

What about Barbara Boxer? She's the only one that really stands out as a leader.

55. I don't know the sampling make up, and if 1,100 is a good #,
but as much as I do think Hillary could be a great President, I don't believe 53% of our Country agrees. I know way too many people who couldn't accept a woman, and more yet that couldn't accept another Clinton. I wonder if the responses weren't by Pubs, hoping that the Dems would make her their candidate, because they know they'd win again!

63. Sounds like a Rove maneuver to
raise false hopes, nominate Hilary and laugh all the way home from the exit polls. Who paid for the poll/propaganda? The good old boys will never let a woman be President in this country, unless she is a bought and paid for puppet like Bush/Condi/Powell.

72. Interesting. I'd vote for a woman, but I'd rather be sure that we won,
even if that isn't PC. I'd be thrilled to vote for Barbara Boxer, though there is an awful lot of animosity being directed her way right now. As for Hillary, my senator, I have been disappointed in her, and Schumer, lately, but was pleased to learn that they both spoke out and voted against Gonzales. And there has never been any shortage of animosity directed at Hillary! Yikes!
:scared:

Also, Siena isn't that far from me, and I live in serious Freeper country. I know that this was a national poll, but it's interesting to me that they'd undertake something like this. They are small and run by Catholic brothers.
