Texas Mom, Son's Bodies Found; Ex Charged
Texas Mom, Son's Bodies Found; Ex Charged

By ANGELA K. BROWN, Associated Press Writer

FORT WORTH, Texas - The ex-boyfriend of a missing pregnant woman has been arrested and charged with the murder of the woman and her 7-year-old son, whose bodies were found Tuesday, police said.

The bodies of Lisa Underwood, seven months pregnant, and her son, Jayden, were found near Denton, about 30 miles northeast of Fort Worth, where Underwood's sport utility vehicle was found Monday. Fort Worth police Lt. Gene Jones said authorities would provide more details at a news conference.

Underwood, a bagel shop owner, and her son were reported missing after she failed to show up at her baby shower Saturday. A pool of blood was found in her home.

Stephen Barbee, 37, of Fort Worth, was arrested Monday night in Tyler and was being brought back to Tarrant County by Fort Worth police. His bail was set at $2 million.

It would be heart breaking no matter when the bastard did it but to read it happened on the eve of her baby shower...DMN article quoted a neighbor as saying that the mom was excited about the shower cuz she never got to have one with her first born.

22. The death penalty is actually counterproductive
The higher the execution rate, the higher the murder rate--and the murderers commit more brutal crimes. It's not only a vicious circle, but it also shows killers have an unspoken death wish--they just want to take as many as they can with them.

Sunday I think. I immediately thought of a husband/boyfriend that did this. My only question is why kill the boy? The pregnant woman is bad enough, but what can a poor 7 year old boy do to this guy. God I detest people like this.

41. Again I agree
I am not supporting the death penalty in this case as I never would. However, I am not sure what would be fitting for this person if it clear beyond a shadow of a doubt that he killed this mother, small business owner, and her 7 year old son only for the reason that he got her pregnant and couldn't stand the idea of having another kid. It's despicable. What do we do with people like that? I'd say at least life in prison.

17. Cases where pregnancy was "the" reason for the woman being murdered
The Washington Post did an article a month or two back on women from the DC metro area who were murdered by their "SO" exclusively because they were pregnant. Generally, motive came down to the "father" not wanting to have to saddled with child support and/or any of the other responsibilities having a child entails.

I'm not one prone to tearing up over things that don't directly involve me but it was one of the most heartbreaking articles I ever read.

53. And we see how outraged the fundies are over MURDER of pregnant women
In fact, it was one of the platforms of bush's campaign. The GOP is so pro-family and so pro-life, they've been waging a campaign for years to stop this tragedy.

No? Oh, wait. Nevermind. I was in a parallel world, where rightwing fundies actually practiced what they preach. :eyes:

And I'm out on a limb here, but anyone who kills a kid, in cold blood, let the killer die at the hands of the State. Get them out of the gene pool and don't take any chances. I'm very hard-hearted about that. No compromise. I don't care if it's a deterrent or not. I want that person off the face of the earth.

An arrest warrant affidavit made public Tuesday afternoon said that the Fort Worth police investigation found that Barbee was the father of Underwood's unborn child. The affidavit said that Barbee told police after his arrest in Tyler that he had argued with Lisa Underwood because he would not leave his wife. During the argument, Barbee said that Underwood kicked him in the leg. He then punched her in the face several times, causing her nose to bleed. At that point, Barbee held Underwood on the floor and suffocated her. During the fight, Jayden entered the living room screaming, and Barbee told police that he also suffocated the child. He put the bodies in the back of the SUV, drove to Denton County and dug a shallow grave

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/022305dnmetbarbee.42802.html

The parents, Bill and Jackie Barbee, still live in Azle but did not answer their door on Tuesday. Several neighbors confirmed that another son died in a car accident and a daughter died for reasons related to childbirth.

Mr. Barbee was married in October 1996, according to court records. By July 1, 2003, he and Theresa Barbee had filed for separation because of a "discord or conflict of personality." After the divorce, Mrs. Barbee kept the house on Ridge Country Road in Haslet.

The couple had no children during the seven-year marriage. However, Mr. Barbee was the subject of a paternity suit by a Granbury woman in 1993. Details of that case weren't immediately available.

In December, Mr. Barbee married Patricia Ann Reinhardt after a courtship that lasted a little more than a year, one of his business associates said. Debbie Lindley, one of Ms. Underwood's neighbors whose 7-year-old son played with Jayden, said she had heard that Mr. Barbee and Ms. Underwood had split because he had another girlfriend. She didn't know of any violence between Mr. Barbee and Ms. Underwood. The couple met about two years ago at the bagel shop, Ms. Lindley said.

47. At the risk of being crass...
There are some lessons here:

"Don't get pregnant by a guy to whom you aren't married"

Keeping in mind the usual issues about access to birth control and abortion procedures - women need to be made cognizant of the fact that (what seems like the majority of men) are reluctant of committment, whether in the form of children or marriage). As such, announcing to that person that you are pregnant is the fastest way to get him out of your life, or worse... I only wish that these women could have just concluded to go to the clinic and save themselves.

"Don't get pregnant by a guy who is married"

Even if he is willing to leave his wife for the girl on the side - which most arent - he will likely be unfaithful. Besides, since he is unlikely to leave his wife and knows that the pregnant girl on the side can really mess up his life, he will do _anything_ to make her go away. Guys (who think they are) backed into a corner like that are way to dangerous. Again, I wish the ladies would just have made the trip to the clinic...

As such, i am not surprised by numbr or style of the killings. I feel badly for the victims, but can't help but think that they played themselves at some level. It is so goddamned stupid to get involved with a married person, not to mention immoral, and as evidenced here life-threatening.

I hate to say it, but unless one is practicing birth control and is willing to go to the clinic should that fail, the religious types have it right when they say no sex before marriage and no extra-marital affairs. (guh)

48. I disagree - not woman's fault!
Sorry, I cannot disagree more with the overall tone of the post.

Yes, it is foolish to get pregnant by a loser or a married man. And yes, abortion is often a way out. But part of being pro-choice is the choice - just because you get pregnant by a loser doesn't mean you have an obligation to abort the child. The loser who impregnanted the mother is responsible for supporting the child if the mother makes the choice to keep it.

Your post makes it sound like the women had it ocming, they knew the guys were losers who can't be expected to own up to the consequences of thier decisions, and if they weren't smart enough to abort the child then they should have predicted the result. I am sure that is not what you meant, but that is how it reads to me.

The killers are 100% to blame, not the women.

49. It called being careful.

Assuming that men killing their pregnant wives is as big problem that this study makes it out to be, and assuming that all of the legislation in the world isnt going to change that fact, it is simply reckless to put oneself in this situations. And in light of the report, as well as 6000 years of men not wanting women to bear children they don't want to have to support, i think its safe to assume that both of the assumptions above are true.

It's like crossing an intersection - if you go on green without looking for cross traffic, you are putting yourself in harm's way as their may be a car running the light. Even though you are in the legal right, you need to be cautious of someone who may be doing wrong. It is not enough to be in the legal right, one should vigilantly consider the wrong-doers around them to avoid an accident in the first place. Afterall, being legally right won't mean shit if you are dead.

I agree with you that "just because you get pregnant by a loser doesn't mean you have an obligation to abort the child." and that "the loser who impregnanted the mother is responsible for supporting the child if the mother makes the choice to keep it." But thats where the rubber hits the road. Most men don't want to have to pay for that child (Please note: I believe that they should be made to pay for the child) and will do anything to avoid that responsibility, including killing the mother. That SURE AS HELL IS NOT RIGHT, but it is predicitable enough to know to avoid the situation.

Ultimately, I don't state that these women deserved their fates - but between the history of what men will do to avoid supporting another mouth and what this study demonstrates, single women who are pregnant (unfortunately) are subject to many increased risks (that, again they shouldn't be).

As far as legal theory, i agree with you - the killers are 100% to blame, not the women.

As far as practicality, I wish the women would have been more like the driver that looks for cross traffic at the green-light and avoids the bad situation in the first place. I certainly would raise a daughter that way.

54. marriage didn't save Carol Stuart or Laci Peterson, quite the opposite
Pathological men who did not want to be fathers is what killed these women.

Or maybe, men who did not want to be tied down in ANY way (marriage, fatherhood). I don't think the marital status of a woman entangled with this type of man makes any difference whatsoever. If the insane party deems her to be a threat to his perceived independence, she is doomed.

How can a woman discern such a thing? It is never the woman's fault.

56. How can a woman discern such a thing?
Always assume the worst. That's the point of my original post, folks should always consider the worst thing that could happen from their actions - whether that result is right or not.

Just like the way you (should) always look both ways when crossing the street; even a one-way street - you never know what idiot may be going the other way...

As to Stuart or Peterson, their situations are particularly tough as they were married - i would really like to know what conversations preceded their pregnancy vis-a-vis the topic of having a child. Without knowing that, i can't say much about their situations.
