Calif. Storms Spawn Tornadoes; Six Dead
LOS ANGELES Feb 22, 2005 — A deadly series of storms across California spawned everything from tornadoes to avalanches, flooding freeways with steady rain and sending rivers of mud crashing through homes.

At least six deaths have been blamed on the storm, including a woman buried by an avalanche north of Lake Tahoe and others who were victims of landslides, traffic accidents, falling trees and flooding.

17. I do too
I love rainy weather. It's a shame that developers don't take into account when they build homes that YES it does rain here sometimes.

22. True,
if I were a builder or buying a new home here I would consult a geologist or something, but you know the corporate developers only care about the Almighty Dollar.

31. it's called winter
a.k.a. The Rainy Season. Happens every year at this time. When it doesn't happen we get ready for a long, dry summer. (Contrary to general belief in the rest of the country, we do have distinct seasons out here).

What is different about this year is that much of the heavier weather has been in southern CA: most years the northern part of the state gets hit harder.

33. death toll up to 9
LOS ANGELES Feb 22, 2005 — Californians braced for even more rain Tuesday as they struggled to recover from storms that have left at least nine people dead, triggered mudslides and tornadoes, and washed away roads and runways.

Among the victims was a Nevada woman caught in an avalanche while cross-country skiing near Lake Tahoe, and a 16-year-old Orange County girl doing homework on a computer when a mudslide crashed through the wall of her home.

In Ventura County, officials closed the small Santa Paula airport Tuesday after more than 155 feet of runway collapsed into the rushing Santa Clara River. Chunks of concrete crumbled into the water throughout the day.

It's been barefoot-in-the-rain weather. I have rarely needed to wear a sweatshirt.

5. Is there any kind of disaster we don't get here?
Earthquake, flood, mud, drought, tsunami, tropical storm, fire, lightning, and tornado all within my memory.

If I get through life without seeing a volcanic eruption or full-on hurricane or meteorite crash here I'll be very surprised.

Fire season after the weeds dry out. The circle of life continues.

My lawn is about a foot high already, and no hope of mowing it until Saturday.

9. Tornadoes are common in the Midwest
Seeing that many tornadoes in California reminds me of the film "The Day After Tomorrow" in which a Bush and a Cheney look alikes fail to grasp the reality of climate change.

12. We don't get the big F4 and F5 ones like the Midwest sees
Most of ours are basically waterspouts from within squalls (lines of cumulus congestus clouds). We don't see the big supercells that generate the "real" twisters.

14. The rain here in Arizona is awesome. The desert is green. I've never
seen it like this. I hope the wildfires aren't too bad this year. I'm sorry for the Californians with the mudslides and everything. We've had some flooding problems, but nothing like the problems they're having.

21. OMG! I was JUST going to post that! I'm 45 minutes from Seattle..
.. and I'm missing our weather lately. My plants and flowers are going to be very, very, sad soon if we don't get some of our rain back!

My stepdaughter is in California this week on Presiden'ts break, and she called wondering how our weather was. Hated to tell her that it was so unbelievably lovely this week.. while she is dealing with floods on her vacation.

Can we please just have some of our snow back??

24. It's been unusually dry for several years.
I moved back to the east from Washington State about a year and a half ago. I was amazed at how dry the weather had been.

I am sorry that Californians are having to deal with so much weather specifically destructive to them.

16. This is the stuff of global warming. It's just the beginning.
Wait until they start having a regular typhoon season from Point Reyes to Peru. All that extra heat has got to go somewhere and move something around.

when I heard about the tornado hitting
us that movie was all I could think about.
So when do we all head to South America anyway?
