US anti-war movement looking for second wind

NEW YORK (AFP) - The US anti-war movement is looking for ways to revive itself, following President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s reelection and in the face of divided public opinion, to see US troops out of Iraq (news - web sites).

Some 500 representatives of pacifist organizations, former combatants, soldiers' families, as well as actor and activist Danny Glover (news), met last weekend in Saint Louis, Missouri, for the first time since the start of Bush's second term, seeking a united strategy for their efforts.

"United For Peace and Justice" the name of the coalition seeking to set its strategy in the coming months, organized the big February 2003 and August 2004 marches in New York, and said demos will be held on March 19 -- the second anniversary of the launch of the US war in Iraq.

In Fayetteville, North Carolina, home to the Fort Bragg military base, the demos will be organized by former soldiers and relatives of military. UFPJ also aims to get people together for a May 1 gathering in Central Park, New York, permit allowing.

1. the second wind will come

with the draft or if bush's war plan on iran/syria is there for everyone to see. iraq nobody cares about. its forgotton already. the dribble dribble deaths of civvies and troops can be easily drowned. nobody cares.

2. With no draft,

things in Iraq pumped up as "improving", and "Vietnamization" being hyped, one could expect a similar thing to happen as happened with the Vietnam War protest movement in similar circumstances.

If our casualties fall, bad news continues to be hidden, and the anti-war movement becomes (made to be) perceived as anti-any-and-all-war (or anti-all-things-military), then it can be expected to have little enough resonance with the American people... If it is gets any media coverage at all (the best strategy to deal with unpleasant realities).

And there are plenty of decent people who believe that we have to stay there until the situation becomes "stable". (I disagree.) Should we just simply pull out now, things could very well go even further to hell. Now, I just don't give a damn -- but it is something to consider.

but I'd just as soon leave a fledgling democracy in our wake. Arabs practically invented counting; they'll make it work.

...And one of the few tools that we do have is threatening to pull out before some (influential people) there want us to.

And, of course, they would have to believe us.

5. I want to see the anti-war movement evolve...

into an anti-Fascism movement that incorporates the totality of the failures of the neo-cons. Protest all of it-the war, the propaganda, the corporate takeover of the media, the jingoism, the assault on civil liberties, the immorality, the ignorance, the intolerance, the new political correctness, the attacks on intellectualism and on those that fight for social justice-the whole damn fascist ball of wax. And bring out the musicians.

6. I didn't realize the first one had been spent

I still despise Dumbyass and his illegal war.

Every day I hear about more people who do...including our men and women in uniform. It's the Heil Fuhrer movement that needs a second wind.
